EGT too high?

I ground my plate to #100 specs, and reduced the boost signal and now instead of occasionally seeing 900 degrees under very hard pulls, I can tap the throttle and see 1150 in a heartbeat. The plate seemed awfully far forward (almost all the way) when I opened the top. I put it back to the same position after grinding the plate. I'm thinking that when my governor spring kit gets here, maybe I should move the plate back a bit.... maybe center it. What say you?

I have stock exhaust and air filter.

How soon do you want to put in new pistons and rebuild the engine?

somis13 05-26-2013 12:25 PM

I run mine at 1200 everyday for minutes at a time and have been doing it for years. keep it under 1250 if your pyrometer is pre turbo and if its post turbo keep it under 850. my 10 plate is full forward, i believe the 100 plate has no defueling at high rpms tho. good luck

You can run 1200 all day. You have more fuel going in and if you want the temps to come down you need more air. It is a balancing act between fuel and air.

My governor spring kit arrived today. I'll slide the plate back a bit when I install the springs. Gotta do something about the stock exhaust too.

If you still have the cat it could be making all the difference, most are clogged by 100k miles.

The cat is still there. Don't know if it's gutted.

I kept my kitty in the corner of the shop for future emission laws

mtdoragary 05-30-2013 08:40 PM

I'd LIKE to put a 4" exhaust in like I did on two of my other Cummins, but my funds are exhausted. So I'll gut my kitty.

When the cat died on mine, I gained 1-2 psi boost and lost ~150°F EGT... My first move before the exhaust was the Cat Delete pipe as you have to go from the stock 3" up to 4" inlet to the muffler.

killing the kitty on the 96 took more time and effort than the complete 4" install on the 93 ! The catalyst didn't look plugged.

joem 05-31-2013 11:46 PM

yeah, its a PITA- seen people use a 2" flat wood bit- that's why I just kept mine for whatever happens down the road. Did you notice a bit more exhaust tone?

mtdoragary 06-01-2013 10:05 AM

I used a 1" by 18" wood bit and a 12" extension, and a piece of rebar and a piece of 1" round stock. haven't cranked it since the gutting.

mtdoragary 06-03-2013 12:19 PM

Took out the nasty paper filter that came with it and put in a nice Wix. Dropped my EGT 150 degrees.

mtdoragary 06-05-2013 11:29 AM

Installed GSK and #10 plate. Measurements on the governor springs BEFORE removal were .025 and .065. I set them both at .040 after install. Haven't cranked it yet because I was missing one banjo washer. Going to the store.
Haven't noticed any exhaust tone change since kitty was euthanized. Tranny shifts quite hard, so I suspect a kit in the tranny, but no TC upgrade. At some point a Goerend TC will be transplanted. Hopefully NOT during one of my trips moving everything from Florida to north Alabama with my 34' Wells Cargo gooseneck!
