Difference in truck and bus engines?
Difference in truck and bus engines?
Does anyone know what the differences are between the cummins 5.9 in a Thomas rear engine bus and a dodge truck. I want to swap a cummins into a F250 and was wondering what the differences are between the two.
The bus and the old ford P pumps are similiar if not the same from what I have found. I have a 1993 P7100 engine from a Ford. The HP rating was 190 and the torque 475, so it is not the same as the Dodge 190HP as it makes a good bit more torque in factory trim. They do come with different injectors and I suspect the pump is a little different...maybe cam too. The factory injectors are 5 hole 300bar. I replaced mine with 4 hole 252bar from an early 220HP P7100 industrial/marine engine. I talked to cummins tech support before hand and they seemed to think the spray pattern was the same on the two. We consulted a pump shop about the lower pop off when retiming it and he confirmed all would be fine. After having the head off, I can tell you the piston bowl design is the same as the dodge. I can also tell you the governor springs do not like shimming and it takes a good bit of tinkering with tension and idle stop to get it to idle below 1500RPM. I can also tell you that there is no hole in the block for the dodge ps/vac pump support brace....odd, but true on mine.
Think that is about all I can confirm for you I know is different or the same.

Seems like I saw a bus engine that had a little different exhaust manifold. The turbo was maybe located lowered to the engine. No other difference, just keep in mind when building an exhaust system.
Yes, it is a the "freightliner" style manifold. It locates the turbo between cyl 4 and 5 right against the block and in line with the oil filter.
