Delayed engine turn off

I am thinking that something is going on with the shutoff selonoid but not sure what. After i turn the key to the off position, the motor runs for a few seconds before it turns off, kind of like the solenoid is binding up. I moved it up and down with my hand and it moves freely with no binds. Any ideas, possible ignition switch? Thanks

It could be your starter contacts are worn and sticking on.
The starter supplies a trigger signal to the solenoid relay which in turn switches power to lift the solenoid.
Could also be the relay is sticking on.
Starter contacts usually wear out between 80-100k, if you have that many miles replace them, easy job.
You can buy contacts here and read up on how the shutdown system works.

Thanks for the tip, i think i fixed the problem, but i dont see how what i did is even related to the shutoff solenoid. I had the tranny in the truck rebuilt, when i dropped the truck off, the truck was shutting off just fine, and when i got the truck back, that is when i the delayed turn off occured. Now a DTT voltage regulator was installed but the guy who put that regulator in did not cut the organe wire coming out of the computer harness, he just tapped into the wire. So the guy that rebuilt the tranny said cut the wire coming out of the computer and then tape everything back up. I did this because the tranny was shifting to early in first and second and he said to try to adjust the voltage and see if that helped. Well after i fixed the wire and tapped it all back up and adjusted the voltage, i took the truck for a ride to see if it would shift any different. I pulled back into the driveway and i turned the truck off and it shut off immidetly. I dont know how the two are related but the problem seems to be fixed. One more question though, if the starter contacts were dragging, would this cause the solenoid to get warm? Thanks

Depending on how long the contacts are stuck on it would get smoking hot and could even start the wiring on fire. The lift up portion of the solenoid draws a lot of amps and is only designed to be energized the short time (hopefully) while the starter is cranking.

yeah, i thought that it would get hot, when i got home from picking my truck up, about an hour later, i checked to see if the solenoid was hot, and it was not, so idk now what was going on with it to cause it to delay turning off, but it seems to be fine now, guess time will tell, thanks

Sticking starter contacts start out intermittent but only get worse.
Replace them before they cause expensive damage.
Wise to replace them if you are over 80k miles even if there are no symptoms.

Now I see you have a 2001 and posted in the wrong forum, ignore everything I said. Your truck doesn't have a shutdown solenoid.
