can I fix this starter?

I have replaced the brushes in my starter when I first got my ctd about 3 years ago, then I put new big contacts in aweek ago. Thursday the starter would bareley turn engine over, like the batteries were dead. I tested the batteries, they are ok. Took starter off and found a lead to one of the brushes came loose. We soldered it back, cleaned it up, and it worked like a new one. Then today on a road trip, the starter is back to barely turning again. So I got it started, and didn't shut it off till we got home. So my guess is, the copper braid came loose again. The solder job probably didn't hold. So, my questions are, what is the correct way to connect the brush lead to the" thing " it goes to, whats it called? And , My Dads '91 starter has bolt on connections for the brushes. Can I change my starter over somehow to the bolt up brushes? Is my starter trash now? Sorry I went on and on. I am hopping to fix this starter.

I'm betting someone nearby rebuilds starters and alternators, a tractor dealer can probably point to someone if no one else can. I'd start there.

Here's instructions, simple enough

If the commutator (the rotating part the brushes touch) is worn out the starter is finished. This usually is what happens if the brushes are allowed to wear too far down.
