cam cover

hi guys, ive got a major leak between the trany and engine and thought it was the main seal. but after removing the trany i found that the seal is dry and good condition. but that there is a small disk like cover over the end of the camshaft that has fallen out and is pissing oil, have tried to reinstall it but it will not stay in place, it looks like it should snap in but does not i am at a loss to solve this problem as my factory manual does not even referance this any help would be apreciated thanks the truck is a 98 ram 12valve 5 speed 4x4

It is an expansion plug, only can be driven in once, not sure of the diameter, but it is Dodge part number 04429687

You might want to get a couple, should fit in snugly, then you smack it dead center to expand.

I think that is the first report I have heard of that plug coming out. Sounds like that is fairly uncommon. Have you seen that plug come out before?

They most often come out if someone pounds on the cam gear without holding the cam with a bar though the lift pump hole.
Happens on a KDP case repair where the person uses the the remove the gear method rather than pulling out the entire cam.

Actually, no. I wouldn't have even known what it was unless Bill had said it many times on KDP threads.

You can thank him........
