Buzzing sound on start up
Buzzing sound on start up
I've got a 97 12 valve with 347000 mi. And just a few days ago it started making a buzzing sound on start up when cold only does it once a day after it sits IOver night going to go take serpentine belt off and see if it's in the accessory drive first. Any one have this happen before. Power steering fluid if full where it should be with synthetic.
Took serpentine belt off and still made the sound for a bout 30 seconds as it has been.... Truck runs and drives strong but once it runs after the initial startup and you turn her off and then restart it it doesn't make the noise for the rest of the day..... Could I be because I ran a gal of lucus in it and 2 gals of royal purple and a wix filter.....? Would hate to drain 140 dollars worth of oil I did the oil change 2 days before it started buzzing.... But it didn't do it after the oil change or the next day only thing I did was plug the block heater in for the first two since I've owned it but I haven't used it since cause I thought it was the issue but it hasn't changed anything weather I use it or not.... Truck runs great and doesn't have any problems.
Power steering pumps don't like the cold and will do that. Very common. Another possibility is the transmission if you have an automatic. Mine does that when it's -10° and colder. But always goes away after it warms up a bit. Don't know how cold it gets where you are, but the use of a winter front and block heater makes a big difference.

I FIXED IT!!!!!! SO IT WAS THE LUCUS I DRAINED THE OIL AND FILLED WITH 15-40 DELO AND IT DIDNT MAKE A PEEP ON START UP.... I will NEVER put lucus oil in my vehicles again... At least my Diesel... I can't believe it..... But I'm glad it's not something major..... Just my stupid self. Thanks for the input everyone
What Lucas product were you running? Was it actual motor oil or a gallon of "supplement/treatment"? If it was one of Lucas' actual motor oil products - which one and what weight? What were your outside temperatures at startup when the noise occurred?
Since the noise went away after you put 15w40 oil in, I'm guessing your temperatures weren't below the threshold for 15W if you were running 15W-40 Lucas oil - unless it was colder on those days. This article has a nice chart with some temperature-range guidelines for the weight and oil type (dino, synthetic-blend, etc). I would check the temperature ranges for the actual oil(s) for more exact ranges, though - temperature ranges might vary some depending on what the oils have in their additive packages.
