broken dipstick

I found the plastic handle to my dipstick on the ground....and the dipstick is stuck a few inches inside the tube. I tried reaching in with a pair of long tweezers, no good. It looks like I'll have to pull the dipstick tube off the block. I havent crawled under to investigate, decided to cool off first . Does the tube bolt to the block (or maybe oil pan) behind the starter? How much of a pain is this gonna be. Then I guess I'll need a new dipstick.

One bolt and it comes right out. Replaced mine with the "new" design some time ago. Better seal on the bottom of the tube, got rid of the "O" ring design.

RT, you might be able to use a little nylon string and a piece of wire to get it out. It may save you getting nasty pulling the tube.

New design dip stick tube is at Dodge. Get the one with a sealing plug at the bottom instead of an "O" ring assy. Ask the parts guy to look for revisions on his part number if he tries to give you the old style.

dipstick handle repair

Same thing happened to mine, I took the clamp off of the top of the tube and then pulled out the metal thingy that the tube goes into. I was able to pull out the dipstick with 4" medical clamps, I then put the handle back on the dipstick and used some copper wire to re-attach the handle to the stick.
I re-assembled the top of the tube and was back in business. took longer to find the tools than to fis the stick.

Well, I'll try and salvage what I've got.

I'm not finding much on this newer revision. Only thing I know is Mopar p/n 4883345, $43 for dipstick only. The dealer told me the only variations are 12V / 24V, but didnt know the differences between the two.

Well I finally got it out today. Before messing around at the block I figured I'd give it another try on the handle end. I removed the clamps and metal fitting on the end of the dipstick tube, then put a magnet of the outside of the plastic tube, so I knew where the end of the dipstick was. I then used a dental pick thing with the 90 degree bend broken off to fit in the tube, and was able to fish it out. It was about 5" deep.

So I can buy one from the Dodge dealer, hunt the boneyards, or try Cummins. The dipstick I pulled out had 3923128 MADE IN USA stamped on it. Looks like a Cummins p/n, but a quick internet search didnt turn up anything. I'll call my local Cummins dealer Monday.

One last note...its been so long since I broke it, I can't seem to find the old handle

I just punched your part number in at http://www.reliablegoods.com/cgi-bin/sqlstore/index.cgi and it said $16.07 I believe. I'm not recommending them, they just gave me a return on the part number. If that's correct, I'd buy new.

Much cheaper buying from Cummins. I've bought two already and they were $20-30 delivered.
