Block preparation

Im prepping the block for installing the head and i've gone over it with a few scotch brite pads but i can still see and slightly feel where the old gasket resting in the block are these spots gonna be alright for when i put the head on?

If you can feel it, then it could affect the seal. Try a razer blade. Very carefully I might add. KD

its not gasket material its the actual surface of the block that the old gasket works its way into over time

IF you mean it's basically just a 'stain' for lack of a better term. Then you should be just fine.
However if you can feel it (and I think u said u could) it definitely needs to come off!

i can buf it down with the scotch brite pads but im worried about making the surface of the block uneven by doing that
