alt pulley removal?
alt pulley removal?
what's the best way to get the pulley off the alternator? i tried holding the pulley a couple different ways and then tried sticking a screwdriver in (my old non-working one) to keep it from turning but just broke the housing.
i don't know what i'm doing wrong here, but i'm beating the crap out of this thing and that nut will not budge. tried liquid wrench. don't have any air tools but i have a big hammer and all i've done is ruin the inside of the alternator. turns out it was just my diode plate that was fried which i could have replaced for $40.
I'd say the only thing your doing wrong is not having an air impact, it will be pretty tough to get off of there without one of those , you can hit that wrench as hard as you want with the hammer , but the shock isn't "fast" enough, an air impact will shock the nut so fast that the shaft doesn't have time to turn , and it loosens the nut.
Do you have a neighbour or friend with an impact gun?

ok, took some more hammering but i finally got it off. so my question is, how much torque do i have to apply to it on the new one? i'm assuming not as much as it took to get it off the old one, but will a 10" wrench and a strong grip on the pulley get it tight enough? i really don't want to try hammering it on there!
