I went to rebuild my vacuum pump on my 98 12v but when i got the pump apart i noticed a lot of scratches on the wall of the pump. How scratched can that be before it just needs replaced? scratched pump
went and talked to a local shop and yea she's toast. Is there some kind of full rebuild kit for these that i can get ahold of? looks like they would be fairly easily to rebuild.
In my opinion, you aren't gaining a whole lot with one of Gould's kits over the Cummins #4089742 kit (available online). There are also performance diesel shops advertising rebuild kits for less than Gould's kit - they may just be the Cummins kit. The only thing Gould really offers beyond the Cummins kit is a DVD and some tools made of PVC pipe and fittings - but from what I remember when I did mine (I drank the Gould koolaid once), you could use deep sockets instead of his PVC driver(s) and there's plenty of info online about the actual rebuild process (it's quite simple). I don't know if the seal in the Cummins kit is double-lip. Since the pump legs are uneven (at least on my '96), be sure to support the short legs before you hammer on anything.
Unless the cavity is machined to remove the scoring, don't expect to see a big improvement in vacuum, as your existing vanes may have worn to match the scoring and are probably good for many more miles. Gould offers a rebuilt forward section that may be worth exploring - I didn't see anything on his site about machining the cavity to remove scratches.
