40AMP Ignition Run Fuse Keeps Blowing, Truck Not Starting - HELP please!

Hi All,

My friend's '97 12v keeps blowing the 40AMP Ignition Run fuse under the hood in the PDC (Power Distribution Center) fuse block.

His truck will not start, and he needs it for work. Batteries have been weak and he has jumped it a few times this week.

Any ideas? Burned starter contacts? Something else?

Please help us!

Thank you!

When does it blow? Does it do it consistently everytime he cranks it? If so, I would install a fresh fuse, then unplug the shutdown solenoid and try to crank it; it's possible that it is internally shorted. I can't remember exactly how that fuse circuit is wired, but it's just one thing to try.

If it is more intermittent than that, I would first charge the batteries fully and make sure they test ok, than try again to start it. Does the starter crank?

Disconnect the started relay. turn the key see if it blows. it also runs directly to your ign switch. it also feeds the fuse for the power outlet and cig. lighter. according to the diagram im looking at thats the map of the entire circiut.

Batteries have been weak
Low voltage = high amps when cranking = rapid starter contact wear = blown fuses
Get new batteries, check connections, replace starter contacts.
