Question 3rd to OD shift

What tells the tranny to shift from 3rd to OD. My truck does not want to shift from 3rd to OD. At WOT it will NEVER make the shift. It will rev to about 2800 RPM and just sit there, no shift, no acceleration. If I let up - just a little - it will make the shift and haul. At part/light throttle it will shift into OD but often it takes a long time to decide to do this and it will happen at different speeds under the same conditions. All other shifts are good 1-2, 2-3 and OD-Lock.

I have tried different adjustments on the TPS (from 0.5-0.8 VDC), and I checked the TV cable adjustment and linkage adjustment. The tranny temp sensor is supposed to be new. Both adjustments will make differences in the shifting but not with the OD shift. It works OK for regular driving but when I want to accelerate fast or when towing it is a real pain - cant get to OD. The worst is towing up a hill. I can't get it in OD. If I push the "gas" down in OD it will downshift out of OD and start to slow down (defuel in 3rd) if I let up on the "gas" and let it run in 3rd it will also slow down, not WOT so I can't get enough speed to shift back into OD - I can't win.

Any ideas on a fix??

Install a lock up switch, very simple, instuctions here http://www.tstproducts.com/tranny_install.html

Take note that the '95 instructions are at the bottom and that you will be able to come to a complete stop locked in OD if you forget to unlock, not real good for the drivetrain. Good idea to use a double pole switch with one pair of contacts powering a pilot light to remind you when it's locked.

OK I re-read my initial post and I realize I don't know what I am talking about. The problem is the same as I posted BUT it is with the 2nd to 3rd shift NOT 3rd to OD!!

So same question but 2nd to 3rd. Could it be the line pressure or the bands, both of which I hear about all of the time. If it is I will drop the pan and try the adjustments. Gives me an excuse to make sure this thing has ATF+3 in it anyway.

Thanks again!!

If the problem is with the 2-3 shift I think you are best to go to a tranny tech unless you know your way around in this tranny. There is a set of springs in the valve body that determine the timing of this shift (I can't remember what they are called). If they are damaged or somehow misaligned the tranny will malfunction on this shift. Go to the suncoastconverters.com and go to the valve body Q&A section. They talk about the springs and how they function. I am not a tranny tech - just a suggestion you could look into.

Just my .02

Good luck, keep us posted.
