1997 2500 Questions

I just bought this '97 Cummins Turbo Diesel Laramie Quad Cab with 118K but the owner's manual doesn't tell me much. It only references "V-8's" which this isn't. I'm assuming it's the 5.9L Diesel as it looks exactly like the '96 pictured in the thread about the guy who put some sort of TST device into his. I can't even find the towing capacity anywhere and the dodge site doesn't show any manuals before 2001.

How do I find out what the rear end ratio is and other such facts?

What sort of aftermarket goodies would be considered to be a "good idea" to retrofit? Air Filters? Boosters? etc, etc..

I'm planning on buying a fifth wheel hitch and trailer and going down through Mexico and Central America to some property in Panama and I want to be a "happy camper" so I'd like to spruce it up before I head out.

Start reading here on this website and forum, follow links, learn all you can. These trucks are easier than you think. Stop by your local Diesel Injection shop and get their ideas on goodies for your truck. Look at the underside of the hood for the rear end ratio. Have fun & good luck.

There should be a tag on a bolt in the top right hand area of your rear differential. It will say what gear ratio you have. It's most likey either a 3.55 or 4.10.

Here is a link to bookmark!!!
Dodgeram.Org There are parts manual listings, part numbers, ratings and anything else you should need to find.. Anything else, well thats what we are for!!!!

The question is always how much you want to spend? After that, then the selections get more narrowed down. If funds aren't the problem, then its how fast do you want to go? LOL...

Take the VIN number to any Dodge dealer.

For a '97, they can print out, from their database, the actual build sheet for that truck. I know 'cause they did it for my 96 last year. That will at least tell you every fact about the truck when it was built, including gear ratios, motor, option packages, etc. Not to say the prev. owner may not have swapped out the rears or something, but at least you will know where you started.

Side step... Not really sure.. The goof that was running the dyno couldn't pedal it with the stock HX35 under 1500°F so my graph looked like Bart Simpsons hair... I spun the heck out of the stock clutch, so over 700

Would like a re-match with the S300 in there now..
