1996 Ram cummins wont start

Truck has been sitting for over one year. It will not start. I tried the primer bulb but doesn't want to pump. I opened the bleeder bolt on top of the fuel filter and it does not want to push fuel out the top. Engine cranks but no fuel coming to the injectors. Engine runs with starting fluid but stalls when the spray is used. Seems like air in the system. I am thinking about putting air pressure in the fuel filler neck to force the fuel as far as I can. Any advice from someone who has had this problem?

add 5psi to the tank look for leaks you might need to replace the lift pump

thanks for the two replies. What I was hoping for was a detailed explanation of what to do to get the truck started. I would deal with the air leak later. Should putting air pressure in the fuel filler neck by drilling a hole in a fuel cap and air pressure from an air tank and watch fuel come out of the bleed bolt? Then what? Try to start the engine? Or open an injector line and wait for fuel without cranking?

Use the priming bulb on the engine mounted lift pump until you hear a hissing sound similar to forcing air through your front teeth. This means she is primed. Might take a couple more revolutions than normal to start, but that's all I have ever had to do.

Since you say the primer won't pump fuel, I am guessing you pumped for about 30 strokes. It takes about that to get air bled out of the system. You obviously have a fuel starvation problem. Since the vehicle has been sitting for a year, I would be willing to speculate the tank screen, preheater screen, and filter are coating with black slime (algae). Go ahead, replace the filter, clean the preheater screen, and buy some algaecide to put in the tank. Try to prime after doing that. If that doesn't work, you may have to drop the tank and clean the in tank screen. Those are my only suggestions. As far as opening an injector to bleed air, in 12 years of owning Cummins diesels, I have never had to open an injector line to bleed air.
