1995 Ram better trans cooler ?

I use my truck for hauling a 5th wheel trailer and on steep hills I get the trans temp gauge up to 200 deg. I would like to find a better cooler because it takes so long for the trans temp to drop after the hills. I have to drive about five miles till the temp comes down to 150 deg. I half to ask what everybody uses?
Thanks Guys

I just installed a fan in front of the tranny cooler that is switched at the dash. Turn it on in high heat situations.

Thanks for the reply . I have been searching for a fan cooler that will run the fan when the fluid gets hot. I have a 10tp installed and love the truck towing, I have found a cooler with a fan but I think I will have to move it to the center of the grill area to get room for it to fit.It looks like it has 1/2" line on it now. I guess I will have to do some looking for a good fan assisted cooler. Thanks CarlJensen

I have seen temps of 230 deg and I don`t like high temps with this stock auto trans. I think the cooler I can run the trans the longer it will last. I would like to find a trans cooler with a fan ,. Thanks Don T

One of the first things I do when I get a Used vehicle, is to flush the transmission out and put in full synthetic amsoil transmission fluid..Mobil also now make a full synthetic fluid..My experience was with amsoil..it dropped 20 + degrees...

RoadDiesel, get some LT rated tires!, sorry I had to through that in there, I have had some bad experiences in trucks running P rated tires.

As RoadDiesel mentioned, synthetic fluid is very good. Another easy thing you could do is replace your pan with a Mag Hytec double-deep pan. It significantly increases the capacity of your fluid, but also helps cool it.

One thing to keep in mind is that there's a coolant/tranny fluid heat exchanger that is designed to have your engine coolant help cool your tranny fluid. However, if your radiator gets plugged up with bugs and other crap you'll end up running with hotter coolant, and that wonderful heat exchanger then turns into a tranny fluid heater. Make sure your radiator is clean and it'll help with the tranny fluid temps.

That heat exchanger also heat the trans in cold weather. That's a good thing.

Guys my truck has had the trans fluid changed every 25th miles since new and I run Michelin LTX truck tires and use a screen in front of the grill to collect bugs and dirt. Just got back from Camping with the 5th wheel and had a great trip.I have seen the trans temp this weekend reach 225 once this weekend and I don`t know how much abuse a stock trans can take. Thanks to all that posted

I run Transmission additives purchaced at any good parts store.. And it helps lower High temp situations... I rarely hit 200 uphill grades.. As a note: I read a chart one time that said for every 10 degs of temp over normal you loose xx number of years on your tran..life.. Constant running @ 200 /up= about 2 YEAR TRANS LIFE...
.I just recently read somewhere you can run to cold too... Haven't had time to look into that one... Also a trans in park doesn't circulate fuid.. but a trans.. in "N" does and will drop a hot trans slowly.... but best way is to get into lock up and stay there..........temp will drop.. Stop and go raises temp.. I drop in to "N" at alot of long /fequient (sp) traffic light in city driving..Especially towing... Hope this helps.. A cheap fix if it does.. If it doesn't you may have a different problem..

I think I will look around and find a flat fan and mount that in front of the trans cooler and put a switch in the cab. Then when I see my trans temp gauge going up I can turn on the fan and see if that helps to drop the tempt down to 150 where it usually sits. This truck and 10 Cub Cadets (1 Diesel ) sure can use up all my time to keep everything running good. Thanks to all that answered my ?`s Don T
