I have a 95 cummins coming in for a project , I would think the alt has a built in regulator , could some give me a run thru on what each wire is for .

The voltage regulator is in the PCM. The PCM senses system voltage and controls the alternator output.

You can add an external VR. if needed.

The alt. output B+ wire is the thick wire on the large terminal on rear of alt. The 2 small terminals are the field wires. The bottom is positive and the top is field driver.

I did see a few post with external regulators , am I best converting to a GM style alternator or is the external a dependable route to go .

Thanks

Don't have an answer to your question.

Here is how the external VR is done. Most posts I have read are favorable regarding this mod. This will work on a 95.
