12v cooling temp sender?

I just got a 95 12v truck and I am trying to fix the coolant temp guage. I cannot easily identify it on the block to test for voltage. I need to know where to look. Thanks!

be sure you get an OE Cummins sending unit!!!

i had two from oreillys that weren't calibrated correctly.

First, check and make sure the terminal inside the connector hasn't pulled out of the socket. i pulled the connector off the sending unit and clipped the wire to observe it more carefully.

it's very easy to pull the terminal out of the connector. especially if you forget to unplug it and pull the head off the engine.

getting these things off trucks that have vaccum assist brakes is a PITA.

If I remember right, you cannot see it from the top. There is a lifting eye bracket on top of the sending unit that hides it. Find the single wire leading to the head and trace it to where it plugs into the sending unit.

I "strained" the wire when I first pulled the head off. I did not see the connection because of the engine lifting eye

Learn from our mistakes first, make your own later!

I got it working. It was apparently loose on the sending unit. I reached in and moved it around and it worked after the truck warmed up.Thanks for the replies
