12 valve head studs

I've been looking at getting a set of ARP head studs for my 97 was told that the rocker arm mounts had to have the backs of them machined in order to make room for the washers and nuts that take the place of the stock head bolts for the ones under the valve covers. Is there any truth to this? I havent lost the head gasket yet but am pushing 52psi under full throttle and would like to prevent it from failing. Any help is much appreciated,

Thanks

yeah I'd like to know also and one more thing how much does something like this cost???

1320 Jan 21, 2009 12:02 PM

It is TRUE. The early design arp studs did not require it. Virtually any you purchase now will be the new design which requires, .200 off the top of the rocker mount.

Cost......I dont know.

I had been told with that little of machining you could clearance the valve cover with a drill press and some time.

Huh thats wild. i dont know why they'ed go from ones that dont need machining to ones that do. what a pain! has anyone had this done?

ive got 2 sets of machined rockers if you guys want some. all they do is take about 1" outa the top.

One inch???

That is a great deal more than .200 of an inch

I would go with the PDR 14mm stud kit, it is stronger and you can do the work yourself to handle the larger studs. Sometimes a higher initial price is actually less expensive, and this is one of those times.

14mm

With these you have to have the block machined![coffee][coffee][coffee]

how is it easier with the PDR 14mm stud kit? just cureious. i need to do some thing quick. my buddy's 12v just blew his headgasket yesterday and now i'm convinced mines next in line to go if i dont do something

ARP 625's would be cheaper than the 14mm once you factor into the machine work, not to mention the labour to pull the engine to do said machine work. It is also said that removing material from the block will weaken, and cause more distortion than the 12mm.

Bluedually4x4 Jan 23, 2009 11:37 PM

Yes machine work is not cheap, and pulling an engine out and stripping it is costs even more.

Buzz'nhalfdozen Jan 24, 2009 06:03 PM

so it sounds liks 12mm ARP head studs and some rocker mount machining is the way to go

Cummins Freak Jan 24, 2009 08:17 PM

have you looked at A-1 studs. does anyone know if they need any machine work done?
