$2900 for 5.9 including manual 5 speed good price?
just talked to my local junk yard, and they pulled up a cummins in there computer.
The cummins engine alone was 1600 dollars, then the trans was 900. the shipping is 400, they might go a few hundred lower possibly.
Came from a 1996 3500 4x4, with 120,000 miles
is this price about average for a engine + 5 speed 4x4 trans? or a little low?
Looking to do the swap into a 1997 dodge ram 1500 ext cab 4x4.
or would i be better off looking around for a 4bta cummins for the 1500? For some reason i cant find any 4 cylinder cummins anywhere.. and last one i saw on ebay was 2,000?

Id say u best be feelin froggy
it might be to heavy for your half ton truck, i think you will seriously have to beef up the front end on it, and ull wind up turnin it into a 3/4 ton anyways... So a 4bt is probly better, if u had another 2500 or 3500 id say
J U M P!!!!

Makes me want a 2500 HD thats missing an engine
now to search for a cheap 4bt
ALSO, would a NV3500 be enough to hold a 4bta's power?

Geez, if you guys consider $2900 a good price for that setup, I'd sell you the whole *^&^ truck for $2500 if I had a 5-speed!!! My whole truck was $500, with the brake and interior work I'm up to around $1200 and I've put 10,000 miles on it since buying it. My father has a '97 CTD 5-speed 4x2 that he has around $4000 into the whole truck with aprox. 80,000 miles. He has another "project" that only has around 45,000 miles on the drivetrain, it was rolled over but the frame and running gear were great. CTD and 5-speed 4x2, and he has around $2500 into the whole chassis.
I'll steer clear of your neck of the woods if I'm hunting for parts!!!

Oops...forgot to answer the real question. I'd go with a 4BT. With that 1/2 ton drivetrain, you'd have to do major beefing to get a 6bt to work. You would need to swap rear axles, front springs and suspension, etc. Even then, you wouldn't want to do any serious towing with it. So, save the hassles and use the much lighter 4BT. Leave your drivetrain alone, make sure you have some highway gears in the rear (3.08 work well for mileage and light pulling with a 4BT), and enjoy 28-30 mpg. Do some searches...there are a couple 4BT e-mail lists and web sites dealing with all kinds of swaps. Check this cool one out and watch the vid:

TELL ME WHERE THIS ENGINE IS !!!
I'll come pick it up for my 1/2 ton RC.
You will need to beef the front suspension, and get stronger axles unless you have a light foot. With the manual, the light foot probably won't help much either.
The weight in the front end will be the hardest thing to overcome. The power won't be hard if you have a decent rear axle (not a 9 1/4). You will need at least a 2500 axle (dana 60 or better).
If you want to do it, then do it. the price is very good compared to around here. Heck, they want over a grand just for the trans here, and you won't touch a cummins for less than 5 grand.

also a 2wd truck isnt exactly worth the same amount as a 4x4 set up, I have seen beat 4x2's go for 4,000 on ebay.
I consider 2900 for a 5.9 with everything 4x4 set up and 5 speed, to be a pretty fair price, last guy i talked to wanted 2900 or 3,200 for just the engine. used, not new or rebuilt anything like that.
Ill ask the guy where its at, its down south east I believe, I might actually want it though in case i want to upgrade to a 5.9 in another 2500 truck, so i have a heavy duty truck i can beat around driving around the country sometimes

Then again
heh its pretty full around the yard here, got 4 big blocks sitting in my barn waiting for cars to be put into
