"Lowering" the rear of a 2wd dually?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone looked at lowering the rear of a 2wd dually? I have always been a lift kind of guy, but the more and more I look at it and people suggest it, I think it would look pretty good lowered just an inch or two in the rear. A couple ideas we have had is to remove one of the leafs from the spring packs and then add air bags for hauling, which could be "expensive". Last night we looked a little bit more into it and noticed what appeared to be 2 individual blocks between the spring perches and the leaf packs. I know on the 4wd models these are used for the lift in the rear (trust me I know quite a bit about lifting trucks), but on the 2wd are these used as shims only or can they be removed to achieve the 1-2" drop that I would like to get. I have always done things completely different than others and I think it would be cool to see a dually that is leveled by lowering instead of lifting....

Any thoughts?

hope you can find an answer I want to try the same thing on a 97 dually. I can only find a 3 in front and 4 in rear i think that is too much.

I dropped the back of my 06' 1-1/2" by relocating the bottom shims to the top of the stack. That way I could use the stock u-bolts and could still change it back later if I wanted. This does present a problem accessing the top bolt of the caliper though. May be tough to get it backed out far enough later to change the brakes. Don't know if you have the same set-up on the 03'.

Mine had Firestone no drill bags when I got it and I removed the 3/4" bottom OL spring. It rides good but the bag travel is short. That's a common complaint with that kit. Someday I'm going to look into the old "drill" bag kit or modify what I have. Craig

Yup...had no problems flipping the blocks...truck looks much better now...doesn't sit so high up in the rear and too low in the front, now it is just right.

I was thinking of lowering the rear of mine 3" or so to level the truck. On a mega cab it looks like you could use longer rear shackles for some of it. I'll look into moving the spacers also. Did moving the spacers to the top effect your pinion angle much?

A really good, and cheap, way to lower the rear is to make, or buy, longer shackles. In the offroad world, we use this stuff alot to make things sit level. You could modify the existing shackles.(cut, lengthen, weld back together) Build (use heavy iron and do it for about $20) Buy it (several offroad manufacturers offer such items for a little more $)

Shackles are definately the easiest way to do it.

I just removed my leveling kit and swapped the rear blocks to level it at stock height. Went from 315s to 285s at the same time. Looks are ok, but certainly not as intimidating. Drives great and hope a little better city milage. I do feel very inadequate now at this height .

With Leveling kit and 315s:

With no leveling kit, swapped blocks in rear and 285s:

Mega's don't have the blocks, so shackles it is.

I have a brandnew set of shackles that I was going to drop the rear down to match the front . I was doing this on a 97 and I am not sure they will work on the new generation. I never put them on instead I raised the front. I can measure them if anyone mite need them.

I am actually about to go to Fed Ex "Will Call" to pick up my shackles due to a shipping error. I bought them from AIM Industries. I may put them on today. I'll post the results when done.

I did this too my '04.5. Lowering the rear by only a couple of inches makes a world of difference.

I had my '06 parked next to my old '04 and the '06 looks like it was kicked in the rear while the '04 looked nice and level.

Mega Dually's are different than Q Cabs. My leaf springs are above the spring hangers on the rear. Regular and Quad Cabs the spring is below rear hanger so they require a shorter than stock stock shackle to lower the truck. I need longer shackles to lower mine which I'm still waiting on. AIM Industries sent me the shorter shackles which would just raise my trick even more. I tried to explain the difference to them, but they already know everything. They are suppost to be sending the correct shackles this time, but I don't have much confidence that they will be right this time either. I was thinking of just removing the thick bottom leaf and the overloads to see what that would do. Right now it takes a 3000 lb. pallet of sand bags to get the rear level with the front. Does anyone know of a flip kit that will work on the duallys?
