Jack does a great job at keeping everything up to date with the latest patches and backups. However, I do keep a copy of every article I add just for insurance.

Nice writeup BC! Makes me want to spend the $$ for a piston pump and put my brand new diaphragm pump on epay (diaphragm pumps been sitting in the garage for about ohhhhhh 8 months now...lazy lazy me).

Your write up
Just changed mine out yesterday and followed your procedures step by step. Great Job...no leaks! I've had the parts for about a month now, just waiting for something like this to come along. This site is great! Carmyne

Just thought I would post up with the new part numbers good as of 9/19/06.
The 2 small seals: 3963983
2 larger gaskets (same as old #): 3931348
Spacer: 3914284
Those should be the right numbers, straight out of the parts guy's mouth at cummins .

Last time I was at Cummins Northwest, they said that the 3914284 speacer was discontinued. I found one by calling around.

Back to top -- guys I was wondering if there was a model or era that this pump is from, is it from a later Cummins? I am wondering if its cheaper to just go to the parts store where there are locations all over the place and get one with a warantee, rather than going to Cummins and possibly spending more?

HOWEVER!
The later models run a much higher output pressure. I can't remember the number, but it's more than we want for the VE.
If you have a late model pump, you can get a spring kit (THD) that allows you to easily build the pump for the VE.
I'm not sure of the many applications, but it appears what we want is only available through Cummins.
Though I've not read about it, perhaps others are aware of a part number that would get it through a local parts house.

There are a bunch of the actual pumps on ebay that are pretty cheap and brand new.
I'm still on the hunt for the spacers and the gaskets for my 4bt. It looks like I could just bend my fuel line to fit as mine runs toward the back of the engine from the lift pump. We'll see.

Cummins has the spacer and the part number is in the tech faqs. Its less than $10 so hardly worth your time to make one!!
In fact everything you need to do the retro from cummins, minus the pump is less that $50.
