Transmission shifting issues 48RE

I have a 2003 cummins with the 48RE auto transmission. When the tranny is warm or cold (doesn't seem to matter) once in a while it will stick in 2nd gear and I have to really rev it out to get it to shift into the next gear... almost like hitting the tow/haul button on my gas job half ton.

It only does it once in a while, sometimes good for a week, other times it does it every single stop light. I brought it to dodge and they changed the tranny fluid, they said everything was perfect inside and the fluid still looked new with no junk in the pan.

They recommended if the issue persists that I might need a valvebody, but after reading on some of the aftermarket sites, they say the truck must be shifting right before installing their valvebody, so could my issue be a sticky solenoid or something easily fixed??

Sounds like mine also. Replaced the Gov. pressure solenoid and sensor. About $200.00 in parts from the dealer, 5 min. to replace them.

The truck was also scanned by dodge, and no codes came up, would a bad pressure solenoid and sensor show up when they scan it??

I should also mention that it shifts the same way from 3rd into 4th, but usually 2nd into 3rd.

It might be happening more often when the transmission is warm, and I put it in park and shutoff, then restart with everything warm, and then intermittantly has the issue. Seems not to be doing it when it is cold now, only when hot

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Throttle pressure adjustment is very sensitive on some units.
A occasional sticking solenoid will not show up on scan

Mine just started doing that. I just ordered the governor and sensor for 110.00 at a local trans shop. I am hoping to have some time nextweek to replace. I hate driving the truck right now.

Well, I guess you can count me in with the shifting issues on the 48RE, mine just started doing it too. Does anyone have a part number and a a tip on replacing the govenor?

Thanks.

Be careful driving with the truck taking off in 2nd. With the torque that these trucks are capable of, it can smoke the 2nd gear band quickly. This is something that you should put off repairing ! Just my 2 cents

Those are the two most common problems with the 48RE, As much as I hate ATS they have a stand alone kit that gets rids of those two sensors and allows full control of shift, pressure, lockup. It has me interested. I went through 4-5 ATS trannies before I said Bite me and went Sucncoast, but that ATS unit is looking really nice. Problem is it looks like Barney built it!

Has anyone ever experienced this problem with their 48 re.Under moderate throttle going up a slight grade ,tranny is in 2nd gear and at about 2000 rpm it will seem like it shifts but it doesnt.RPM will still be the same after ,its still in 2nd gear, and as you continue to accelerate,it shifts into 3rd and finally 4th.This transmission was just rebuilt by Chrysler and has a new Govenor pressure valve solenoid. It seems to me that it did this sometimes before the rebuild too and thats why I was wondering if any one else has any ideas on this one . Thx

I would imagine they have been updated since then, but non-the-less it fixed my shuttle shifting issue.

More than likely what you are feeling is the TC locking up. Update the converter and up the pressures and it becomes more pronounced. A lot of what people think are 2-3 shuttle shift problems is simply the TC locking and unlocking in response to APPS input and the driving situation.
