Torque converter cooler from Cummins saved me BIG $$$

Just a heads up. The torque converter cooler on my 03 truck went out and filled my trans with coolant. Looked around online and they were about 650 to 900 bucks. Called Cummins in Mobile AL and gave them my engine serial number and they have the part for like 365 plus tax and freight. It is being shipped from Memphis so when it gets here I will post the cummins part number for others reference in the future. This is the cooler that bolts to the driver side of the block below the fuel filter housing.

Yeap, that is the heat exchanger. They have been known to crack. Hope the rest of the trans is still good.

(This may be something you need to read, .TSB recall #C44)

Date: February 2004

Models: 2003-2004 (DR) Dodge Ram Pick-Up Trucks

NOTE: This notification applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 5.9L Cummins diesel engine (Sales Code ETC or ETH) and an automatic transmission (Sales Code DG8 or DGP) built through November 24, 2003 (MDH 112407).

IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to stop sale and complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

Subject:

The transmission cooler line on about 97,000 of the above vehicles (233 in Int’l markets) can transmit high pressure pulses when the vehicle is operated at heavy loads. These pulses may cause the engine-mounted transmission cooler to crack and leak fluid which could result in significant transmission damage.

Repair:

The transmission cooler line must be replaced on all involved vehicles. In addition, the engine-mounted transmission cooler must be inspected and replaced if necessary.

Parts Information: A. Transmission Cooler Line
Part Number Description
CBLAC441 Transmission Cooler Line
B. Transmission Cooler
Part Number Description
CBLAC442 Transmission Cooler - Engine-Mounted

Due to the small number of involved vehicles expected to require transmission cooler replacement, no parts will be distributed initially. Transmission coolers should be ordered only after inspection determines that replacement is required. Very few vehicles are expected to require transmission cooler replacement.

Service Procedure:

A. Inspect Transmission Duty Cycle
B. Replace Transmission Cooler Line

C. Replace Engine-Mounted Transmission Cooler and Cooler Line

The procedure is too long for html, download a pdf version to see the procedure.

oil cooler (2003)

I have a leak in my oil cooler. Took it to the dealer and they said the cooler line was replaced as per recall and they would not replace my oil cooler. This sucks. looking for a way to bypass the cooler until I figure out a proper course of action. Cheapest cooler I found so far is $628- ouch!

I don't have the paperwork in front of me right now but I bought my cooler from Cummins NOT the dodge dealer. It was 365 dollars plus shipping delivered right to my door. I gave the guy on the phone my engine serial number from the info sticker on the valve cover and he looked up the part for me. He was skeptical that they would carry the part since it is trans related instead of motor but they did.

I can confirm

My 04 Cummins had the torque converter cooler snap and dump fluid all over the highway. The dealer wanted $920 for a new one. I called Cummins northwest, and got one from them for $291. $315 after shipping to my shop. Unbelievable markup. Part number is 4337537. Hope this helps.

I realize this is an old, but I am sure it will be read by many. My TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER DODGE RAM 2500 3500 DIESEL 5.9L 68004317AA on my '04.5 cracked last week. What I don't see posted in this thread is the potential consequences.

1 Could dump transmission fluid on ground. Disappointing.

2 Could leak transmission into cooling system. Will require a complete cooling system to remove transmission fluid.

3 Could leak coolant into transmission. Worst case, will quickly destroy the transmission. Flush the transmission not likely to help, the antifreeze eats the transmission clutches pretty quickly.

I have been told it is typically a 3 hour job to replace.

My TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER failure was number 2 above. I checked with Cummins West, and was quoted $300 plus shipping. I found three coolers on Ebay for under $260. One was made in Turkey, one source unknown, and the one I ordered made in USA. I expect my cooler to be here any day.

Here is a link for the TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER DODGE RAM 2500 3500 DIESEL 5.9L 68004317AA at $235 with shipping included.

TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER DODGE RAM 2500 3500 DIESEL 5.9L 68004317AA PAINTED NB - American Cooling Solutions

They also manufacture other coolers, including 0'07 and newer.
