My 4x4 Is Not Working (Please Help)

Ok so I've got this 1994 3/4 ton. I have had the truck for a few months though and the guy I got it from told me the 4x4 system was working but I haven't needed it so I haven't tested it.

Well the other day a friend of mine got stuck in a ditch, I thought it might be easer for me to pull him out in 4x4 Low gear. The transfer case worked great but the front didn't lock up to give me 4x4. Any idea where I need to start on this? I really don't know much these trucks but I follow directions really well.

Where do I start and can someone tell me how the locker system works?

If you want more info on the truck here is a link to my "build thread"

These trucks have a transfer case design called, 'part time'.
It will in 4x4 lock the front and rear drive shafts together.

Are you sure the front shaft is in it?
They don't lock wheels together left and right.
They guy you bought it from was he a mexican???
I have a friend who's girl friend bought a 4x4 suv from a mexican and found out later the front shaft was missing.

The most common problem is the front CAD system having a vacuum leak.

There is a vacuum line that comes from the top of the firewall above the brake booster and runs down to the switch on the transfer case just beside the lever. From that there are two lines that run along the cross member, up the frame and back along under the engine cross member down to the front passenger half of the front diff. There is a vacuum pot on there that shifts the front axle and locks the diff to the right wheel. If the lines are rotted or have come off it won't lock and the shaft will just spin inside the axle tube. Check all the vacuum lines for leaks or cracks. Check the pot actuator with a vacuum pump to see if it moves or engages.
