2009 Ram Gasser Question
Hey folks,
I know this isn't a diesel question but I am sure one of you will know the answer. One of my employees just got a call from his Ram dealder letting him know that since he just passed 100,000 km on his truck it is time to change the sparkplugs in his truck. The truck in question is a 2009 Ram 1500 with a hemi-V8. The dealership told him the truck has 10 spark plugs. Is someone smoking something special at the dealership or do 2 of the cylinders in this engine actually have 2 plugs?

A dealer told me they'd replace the internal and external filter on my 47RE tranny when doing a 30k mile service, and they also don't adjust the bands because that's only needed every 100k miles. Don't believe a word they say, go with the owner/service manual for the truck.

The Hemi has 16 plugs, and 8 coil packs. The coil fires one plug on its cylinder and one plug on the cylinder that on its exhaust stroke at the same time. The coil pack on that cylinder also fires at the same time, on the other two plugs on that pair of cylinders. That way it takes two plugs or two failed coil packs before you run with a dead hole.

A local Dodge dealership has specials for the normal 30K tune up for $136.00, though expect the other 8 plugs are higher priced and I was surprises to hear the Hemi has 16 plugs. Heard a guy who paying for his tune up who thought $136. including tax was to high a price for a Hemi tune up.

You can't be serious that a spark plug R&R, even if there are 16 of em, is a $450.00 repair bill? Now maybe in Canada - Oh, wait, you are in Canada. Yeah, no, that sounds about right for a Canadian ***********. WOW! What a rip off!
Cheers!

That price actually sounds pretty normal. Consider that the plugs are platinum, and likely sell for $10 - $15 each, and the fact that the second set of plugs are probably no fun at all to reach. Yuck, spark plugs, who needs em.

Hemi's doesn't use platinums unless it's a recent change. I did it last year on my Hemi powered Magnum. Several hours of work to change all 16. Factory is Champions and I went to NGK's.
