Water pump life span
What is the average life span for our water pumps?....I bought my truck with 365KM and now it has 422Km...Not sure, if or when the water pump was replaced before I bought the truck...Would it be a good PM just to replace it or wait till it starts to leak or falls apart.

I have never replaced a water pump before it started to fail. All have given some type of warning. If the bearings are good and the seals not leaking, let it go. The poor quality of some aftermarket parts is another reason to keep your oem part if it is working. What shape is the rest of the truck in?

I replaced mine around 150K only because I was replacing the tensioner, alternator, thermostat, and coolant. Figured another $50 or so dollar wouldn't hurt to spend. I'm keeping my old pump as a back up incase mine ever goes out.

I've replaced 3, two from Cummins and the last from NAPA. The first was at 157k in the Cummins parking lot in Phoenix. The second was at 431k in parking lot in IL. and the last one I discovered at home, 611k. Pretty easy to see there is no pattern.

My Father-in-law replaced his pump on his 95 with 320,000 km on it then only got less than a year out of the replacement pump from NAPA. I would say, replace it when it starts to leak, otherwise, leave it alone..
