want more lowend towing umph...
I have a 2005 quad cab shortbed 4x4 ctd with the nv5600 and 3.73 gears.. currently I run my smarty on the highest setting with my strait exhaust, rokktech timing sensor, afe stage II intake and southbend con ofe clutch.. I want more bottom end grunt for pulling trailers... I pull often and in tight hilly roads... light and heavy loads... Any suggestions??? turbos, boxes injectors.... etc??? Need lowend..

cheap and easy, no truck mods, get smaller diameter tires. or if you dont care about $ too much, a really good set of towing twins. your stock factory turbo is a compromise between lag, cooling, and pulling power. it wont do any one thing really well.

4.11 wont yield dd mileage that I need.. If i could go to a good single aftermarket turbo I would. I dont think the smarty adds any lowend. good mid top performance though... I am thinking of getting a full banks set up. seems decent without all the updating hassles and what not... just want my truck to have some Edited by admin. Know what I meen?

honestly i am unsure of what program it has.. I bought the box around feb f this year and just set it on the highest level that came programmed in the smarty from the factory and havent changed it... just seems I can really feel a 7k lb load and I think it should pull better than that..

Pulling often and wanting more low end points to changing to 4.11 gears. Are you using the stock tire sizes? If you are towing, you won't be loosing mileage and if you are towing heavy, you may even do better depending if you were mismatched already? I would have to say you have unrealistic expectations considering your current truck combo. If you really require more torque for what you are doing, you should be looking at a larger truck with a larger engine.

all the diesel shops i talk to will tell ya these motors aren't made for low end grunt like the vp powered trucks. the run better at mid to high end. that came from brady at II and john at floorit also greg hogue. you probablly could get a phatshaft 62/12, that might help.

I had a 2001 ext cablong long bed 4x4 ctd ho nv5600 3.73s with 33's with a 100hp injectors, mcleod clutch, fass pump, afe2,and tst powermax and it seems that my 05 which bought new and traded the 01 for just doesnt pull as good. I like the truck just want to be able to get good mileage driving to to work and also be able to haul my trailers on the weekends and other times when needed and be able to really pull... I just love the feeling of power..

I've got the Banks 6 gun (w/ speed loader) w/ the PDA and I'm pretty happy w/ it. I've ridden in trucks and seen them at the dyno with the Edge (Attitude and EZ stacked together) and Bully Dog and I didn't care for all the fuel they decide to throw at the engine. I also spoke with all three companies tech lines and Banks employs real engineers and were the most helpful. They also have a lot of parts for the CR CTD that are not on the website.
If you downright want the truck to have major stones then you really need to look into the PDR towing twins set.

You probably need an aftermarket lift pump. Also you might want an Edge EZ, Quad XZT (pressure only), or an mp-8. If you get an mp-8 don't crank it to the highest setting. You'll toast your injectors. You might want to wait until the new Smarty program comes out too. It's suppose to be pretty awesome. Maybe some injectors too. What gauges are you running on your truck?

Another thing that will help with low end is a cam (+ don't for get to do the valve springs also). A cam will help with mileage (about +2mpg) & lower your peek torque.
I have the Quad standard, a modified FCA with stock 3.73 on 33" tires. Pulling 6-8k isn't hard on the engine. Are you luggin' the engine. If you're towing, make sure you keep it above 1600rpms. Espically up hills. 2100rpm is the sweet spot.
