Twins setup 3B or S400
If a guy were building his own setup from scratch, which would be easier to plumb?
All said and done, is it worth it to build your own or is Rip's setup priced right? I mean 340-380 for the hotpipe, is that what it costs to get all those bends just right or can a guy save a bunch doing it himself?
I figure, why spend 1400 on a big enough single if I can have an S400 or BHT3B under my stocker for the same price?

They also sell a flange kit which is worth it if you ask me. Thats here:

The hot pipe is just a 3" sch. 40 steel elbow that you can get at any pipe supply house.
I am getting my 4" stainless elbows for $25 a piece.
Rips kit is nice, the money is for the labor, most people dont have a welder, so thats alot of the price.

I would use an S400. IMO Rips kit is priced right. You can save some money if you want to do it yourself, but plan on spending some time. Rip also have the pieces in various stages of completion, so if you want to do some of the welding, and or finish work then you can.

I would use some of Rips pieces to do the job, and do some yourself, an S400 flows more than a HT3b and the pipe work is cleaner since it's a clockwise turbo.I'd get his hot pipe and bottom charger bracket then you do the rest. You cant get his hot pipe without the bottom charger support brackt/ oil drain cause his hop pipes are made out of regular exhaust pipe and cant support all the weight of the bottom charger without a support.

that sounds like a good set up. Piers uses the HT3B and says it would support up to 550 HP, so would the S400 (since it flows more) support more than 550?

The s400 does flow more than the HT3b. The issue is moot though, because both of those are really able to flow more than your top stock turbo will process. Piers is right, you will support 550 with the stocker.. barely. The same with the s400. If you put an HX40, for instance, over the HT3b, then you are good to 700. Same bottom turbo... make sense?

Yeah a stock Hx-35 with 12cm housing would choke down twins with an S400 but you could run a 14cm or 16cm housing on it to open it up some for more top end power, or put a 35/40 Hybrid on top

The hot pipe flanges would be a pain to make yourself if you do not have the right equipment. Get the flanges and make your own hot pipe if you want to save some bucks. I don't think you could save much having them done some where else.

Dont get me wrong. Rip is a great guy and has great customer service. I have bought from him before.
But yes, if you look around at some of the turbo shops you will find the flanges for a 1/4 of the price.
You have to remember, the S300 and S400 are old turbos. People have been using them for a long time.

Here for example, I posted that Dallas Turbo has the flange kit. 5" downpipe adapter, 5" vband clamp, S400 Compressor outlet flange, S400 vband clamp,
S400 exhaust plate with gasket, Oil drain flange with gasket and bolts. That $192
If you go on Rips site and add up the 5" adapter, 5" clamp, S400 outlet flange, S400 clamp, and an S400 exhaust flange thats $242. WITHOUT the 2 gaskets and oil drain flange.
LOOK AROUND YOU CAN GET THINGS FOR CHEAPER.
Rip isnt the only one selling this stuff. He just rounded everything up and put it on one webpage. Its called being an entrepreneur (find it for cheap and mark it up). This is how buisness works.
