tick noise at idle mostly when cold
i have notice the my engine ticks real loud especially when the engine is cold. is this the hydrolic lifters or the electronic fuel injectors and is it normal. my oil pressure run on the very hide side of the normal range area on the guage until it warms up then it runs alittle over the middle mark. does anyone know wear they take the presure reading from, the begining of the oil glarries middle or end?. she runs fine only 1600 mile on her so far.
thanks

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Sounds normal to me too. On your first trip to the dealer mention it and have them record it on the work sheet. The mechanic will probably say something like "can't duplicate the probelm", but so what. It is recorded for the future in case it really is something to worry about.

Just to make you feel better.
I have the same noise.
Goes away when warm.
almost like an exhaust leak.
I think it has to do with my hissing noise when slowing down too (coasting off throttle and slowing from 1500 to 1100rpm, does it in each gear)

I think if we could find a way to silence the sound of the diesel engine we'd probably hear all kinds of funny noises that make us wonder what the heck is going on under our hoods...

Re:tick noise at idle mostly when cold
I have noticed a simular sound but mine occurs at idle and it sounds more like a check valve rattleing (very load). This sound comes and goes hot or cold. I asked dealer there response: they all sound like that!

1. our cummins engines run solid lifters.
2. these engines are EXTREMELY quite.
3. the diesel combustion process is very violent, the noise reduction in these engines is nothing short or a engineering marval!
4. all said you can now here different things going on with the truck.

Normal, normal!!!!

Agreed. Mine does it warm or cold; the engines are now so quiet you can hear all the stuff you couldn't hear before - like injectors and stuff like that. I strongly suspect it is the fuel tranfer pulses, as it got a little louder when I put in my mechanical ISSPRO fuel pressure guage - I can hear it tick.

Re:tick noise at idle mostly when cold
That kind of brings up another question though. Why will these engines not idle at a constant RPM? Sometimes I can set mine on 1200 RPM's and let it idle and it will stay there indefinitely. Other times it will go up and down between 1200 RPM's and about 1450 RPM's. What causes that and what's the reason for it??

Hey Hoss I talked to a Cummins Mechanic he stated that thats normal only when realy cold outside, something to do with cold temptures. he told me not to worry about.

Re:tick noise at idle mostly when cold
Mine has been doing it when it's 90+ degrees outside. Nothing to do with the cold. Sometimes it holds a constant RPM and sometimes it doesn't. ??? It typically only does it right after I've started up in the morning.

Re:tick noise at idle mostly when cold
Hoss,
Mine does it also. Only when the engine is cold. Guess the computer is adjusting the idle per inputs from the sensors. Within a mile of driving the engine idles normally.
