Taking the next step: beyond big turbah

Well, this is my second Sledpuller 66 to go bad in the last year. It's burnin oil faster than I can pour it in! They simply do not live at this power level, so I'm going out on a limb, and trying to go further with a single turbo. I'm building an adapter and using an ATS 2nd get manifold flipped upside down, then fabbing a downpipe to fit it. It will have to be externally wastegated.
She's a Garrett GT42 The inducer measures 74mm the exducer is a whopping 102mm, and the exhaust is 1.15 A/r. I'll get more pics when she's on the truck, and of the buildup

White,
Does it have a T6 Flange???? if so ATS makes a big mouth manifold called the big foot 2nd gen manifold that should do just fine. Haisley's have them in stock. What is the wastegate for? With a turbo that big I'd be more concerned with putting a bov that is set for 70psi on the intercooler inlet as with the volume of air it can pump you might have pressure surges. My K31 has a turbine A/R of 0.88 or 0.90 but it came with a wastegated A/R 1.35. The Aurora 5000 which is a borg warner (KKK) k31 is not wastegated and has an A/R of around 0.80. You will be ok with this turbo at the track with a 30# bottle of NOX but for everyday you would need the full 100# tank to carry around that is used just for spooling otherwise you will fog out the world. ks

no.. its got a T04 divided turbine housing with a 4" v=band discharge. i run the same turbo..just a GT45R on my Eagle Talon drag car( 81mm inducer/108mm exducer) with a 1.01Ar turbine. i just use a dual ball bearing center section on mine.

you'll love that turbo... let us know what happens with it.

that turbo will support around 1200+hp on a gas application... probably around 850+ on a diesel application...just to let you know, your going to need a LOT of fuel to meet the air that turbo will toss. even at really really low boost levels(that thing doesnt shake a leg till the mid 30 psi range)it will move a ton of air. i move about 44lbs/min worth of air at only 20psi on the race car and thats with only 2.3L of displacement....so if your looking around the 70psi range or within reason you will see a major increase in flow. that turbo is rated for 96lbs/min or airflow or in cfm is...around 1600-1700cfm... stock turbo is around 500cfm or something.

Adam,

I ran that turbo. Mine is a 42 with the 74/102 compressor and 83 turbine. It has a T-6 flange on the 1.14 housing. Been messin with it for like 3 years now. It makes 75 PSI. Barks like a dog if your not careful. The wheel rubbed the compressor housing on mine in under 50 miles.

It will support over 750 HP on a Diesel. I have seen the K-31 go 800 and the GT4202 is larger, so you kow what your dealing with.

It is a lazy turbo. Expect low or no cruising boost. It works much like an on and off switch. Once you flip it on......ITS ON!

The 02 wheel is heavy because of the nutless compressor wheel design. The wheel itself is threaded and not through drilled.

I recall a Dyno event here is Dallas. I took second place. Quad got 1st. I was 630, he was 650. I had that single and Diesel. He had a DMAX on nitrous with s stock turbo. Remember this was 3 years ago, we have come a long way since then.

Whitesport,
If I could give you a bit of advice before installing it would be to bump down to a 1.01 A/R turbine housing before the install. 1.01 is even kind of big for what we are down right now at our rpm's levels.
The 1.01 should keep you from snuffing out really easy on the tight tracks.

The 1.01 is like an 18cm or better housing if I was to compare.

Also,
If you get the 1.01 housing it comes with a T4 foot that will fit perfectly with the T4 outlet on the ATS 2nd gen race manifold.

Blue--I've been through 1 main cartridge bearing (trashed compressor) and oil seal, and this time it's the thrust bearing and oil seal.

abc-- you have a very good point, however I'm seriously stepping up in fuel and hopefully RPM increases will be sooner than everyone is thinking. It is T-4 divided flange.

DonM-- this turbo is EXACTLY what you've been messin with, only it's a T-4 GT42-02. I need some big flux's!!!

cquestad-- The A5k was my first choice, but I bought this turbo for my Supra and went bigger before I ever installed it. Besides, I'm always one for being different

I'm going to look into ATS race manifolds now, it's bound to work better than building adapters.

You should see the GT47 88 for the Supra. It's a tad bigger.
