Well, today me and a friend installed my 3600 DD . Everything went very smooth( thanks to the knowledge base I have found here). It took us 3 hours frome start to finish. When I got in to try it out , I could hardly get it into gear. I have read here that others have had the same problem. I got to thinking , When we put the trany back in we had to draw it in with the bolts the last 1/2". I think it is beacuse of the roller pilot bearing putting a preload on the trany main shaft. What do you all think? After putting on about 100 mi. it is starting to get better.

 

Hard to say about the getting it in gear thing.
I dont have experience with the G56 tranny.

How is it shifting now?

 

It's shifting a little better now ,after about 100 mi. , I'll give it some time. I think it wiil get better over time. I just hope it doesn't do any damage to the trany.

 

Rule number 1 with any tranny is don't use the mounting bolts to suck the trans up to the engine you could do some serous damage.....

 

Rules are meant to be broken. I have to "walk" mine in everytime with bolts.

Just have to use your head.

 

Then what have you done? We did alot of wiggle up down and all around for about 15 min. befor we drew it in with the bolts.

 

Can you put it in gear with the clutch pushed in without the truck lunging from the clutch dragging?

Also do you have the upgraded hydro's?

 

Yes , I do have the hydro upgrade . The clutch is working good.

Maybe my angle of my dangle was alittle off as well.

 

talk to it nice and sweet, if that don't work then start cussing, crawl out from under the truck and drink a cold one. repeat if nessessary.

 

Put your truck in third then into first or second, wich ever one you take off in and it will go into gear easier. I pulled mine up with the bolts too but I just use a hand ratchet and dont over do it.

 

A suggestion when you get to that last inch. at this time you are bumping the pilot brg. If you draw it in you may damage the pilot because you are putting a lot of pressure on the inner race until you force it into the hole. Hook up the hydraulics and push the clutch peddle in. This will free the disc's and allow the input shaft to find center.

After talking to my buddy that helped me with the install, we think it was more getting the tranny on the line-up dowels than into the pilot bearing, because we didn't have to draw it in untill the last 1/4" to 3/8". If I had to do it agin I would make up 4 pins ( allan bolts with the heads cut off ) to keep everything stright.
