Smell Raw Fuel
Smell Raw Fuel
The other day I got into the pedal to check my boost and afterward I could smell diesel fuel. I opened the hood and all was dry. I then went the the exhaust and it smelt rich.
I'm wondering what I might have done.
It is not smoking at idle.
Could an injector be bad or something after a WOT through three gears?
Thanks for any help.

IF I understand this correctly, the injector is like a relief valve. It holds back pressure until the pressure overcomes the spring and then it sprays the fuel into the combustion chamber until the pressure drops and the valve reseats. The injector pump times the fuel to be injected at the right time before top dead center. Then the pressure is redirected to another cylinder and so on. With stock injectors that have a lot of miles on then you may be seeing low or uneven pop pressures and/or worn nozzles. I would tend to think that would produce a smokey exhaust and low power. If the compression is there to generate heat to create combustion I wouldn't think you would be smelling fuel without smoke. Check the lines going into the tank for the raw fuel smell.
Then if those are the original injectors you may want to have them tested. Mine were worn out at 180,000 miles. The tips needed replacing and the shop that was going to do the work wanted $85.00 US each. If they are bad or like in my case just looking for an excuse, upgrade the injectors.
It is always more fun to have more power.

Thank you Boatnik! Much appreciated.
My truck just turned 200K and I believe the injectors are the original.
It is strange that I smell fuel in the exhaust with no smoke.
I hope I didnt mess up a valve or something from possible over-reving it through the gears.
I'll look to the items you have mentioned.
Thank you very much for the help.

I feel like a goofball
... I found the problem.
Behind my bench seat I had kept some fuel conditioner. I guess during a hot day the cap came loose and was dripping out the contents.
With my back sliding window open I thought the smell was coming from my exhaust. I was wrong... but I believe I still need injectors.
Thanks all!
By the way... Smell coming from the air box is a bummer!
