Odometer
Odometer
I have a 1990 Dodge/Cummins with only 86,000 miles on it. My trip meter quit working a
few months ago and now my odometer has quit. Is this something that can be repaired by
an owner with limited mechanical knowledge? Thanks.

Carroll, I had the same problem and it was simply the wiring harness to the sending unit on the tranny had come loose. The speedo still worked but the OD quit.
Pullit off, clean it and apply some dielectic grease to it and that may solvwe the problem. If not search the posts on Speedometer sending units for details on how to locate and replace it.
Hope this helps....

Is your speedometer/odometer the newer electronic type or mechanical and run with a cable? My 89 is mechanical. If it's mechanical you can probably get one at a bone yard since the gears in yours are probably stripped.
You can change the reading by slipping the shaft out of it's clip on the end opposite from the gear. Then rotate the numbers to what you want and slip it back in. Make sure the tabs in between the numbers engage the holding rod properly.
Also, don't break the plastic clip off the cable when you're removing the unit ffrom the dash. If you do you can use about 3-4 tiewraps to hold it back in though.

My 91.5 has the electronic speedo. Shortly after I bought the truck the odometer stopped working. The speedo worked fine otherwise. Turned out to be a small plastic gear that fell apart in the speedo. Shop said they get brittle from the heat down here. I searched all over and nobody wanted to sell me just the gear I needed (had it all apart). Finally found someone to sell me just the gear for around $30-40. (I'll have to look and see if I still have the info)
I do have this from an email I sent out
"Upon romoval and inspection a small gear set, between what looks like a
small stepper motor and the gears for the mileage and trip rolls, has
fallen apart.
The part is a small white disc with a large blue fixed gear on one side (16 tooth)
and a small blue non fixed gear on the stepper motor side (20 tooth).
The speedo is a 100 mph model (VDO Yazaki) in a 1991 Dodge D250
4x2 with the Cummins diesel."
The blue gear is what I needed
