new cj oil

A while back there was discussions about the new cj oils not being good for our older engines. What are the implications of using the new cj oils and has anyone noted a problem with the new oil? It looks like i am all out of the ci oil so the next oil change will be the new stuff. I have a 92 first gen cummins and a 93 cummins with p-pump in a 96 motorhome. Thank-you, Rod.

There has been a lot of debate about the new oil but no real conclusions as far as I can tell.
Cummins says it's ok for the their engines but John Deere sent me a notice saying not to use it in their engines. JD dealers still carry the CI oil.
Surveys I've read with several major trucking companies say they haven't had problems with hundreds of thousands of miles use of CJ in many different engines.
I've used CJ in both my Rams for about three oil changes without problem but then again I wouldn't expect to see problems for at least 100k.

My feeling is that the bottom line is if you're concerned use CI oil for as long as you can get it.

Could you guys please enlighten me on these different oils you are mentioning? I am new to the diesel world this year and I'd like to avoid making costly mistakes if possible.

Thanks,

Dave

Like most people, I don't have hard data to prove one oil is better than another. Personally, I feel like it's not as good as the old CI-4+ oil for the older engines. I think it'll work fine and you may go hundreds of thousands of miles without noticing any ill-effects but that still doesn't mean the oil is as good or better. You can ask this question on bobistheoilguy and they'll all argue it's a better oil, but it's really just a handful of people. Like Infidel said, if John Deere went out of their way to send a notice, there must be some differences. Not much we can do though. Overall, today's oils are really good, and as long as you maintain your vehicle, I doubt you'll have any engine problems due to the oil. Other stuff will wear out long before the oil does any damage.

Always use an oil that has an API "C" service rating. The "C" is for compression ignition. Never use an oil that only has a "S" rating. Most "C" oils are also rated "S", but never vica-versa.
Current oil is CJ-4 The previous oil was CI-4 (CI-4 PLUS) CJ-4 was developed for the newer low emissions engine and after treatment packages.
As long as you change your oil on a regular basis and/or use oil sampling the new CJ-4 is fine in your engine.

That and their break-in oil requirements with 100 hour initial change.
I've been running a new 7630 MFWD this month with the IVT. I am really impressed with tractor. VERY quiet cab, friendly controls, and extremely precise speed control.
They didn't order a foot throttle which I really miss for the road trips and for turning in the headland.
