Need some quick advice please

Tonight i was adjusting my valves on my 96. got them all done and was torque'n the lock nuts to 18FTLB and the Adjuster Screw on #1 Intake busted off flush with the rocker.. not good. i was wondering can you bend a pushrod doing that. i figured that the lock nut pretty much stoped all adjusting movement as i was tighting them to spec. I need some help .. Thanks very much for replies.

If you only put 18ft/lbs on it you shouldnt have anything to worry about, and even if you put 100ft/lbs on it, it should open the valve well before you bend the pushrod. Just make sure that while torquing the jam nuts, you didnt move the adjustment screw.

The torque wrench didnt even click at 18. im worried that more than just that one will do that. Do they un-screw from the bottom?. because if u back it clear out it stops. so i figured that the just thread out from the bottom. i really never heard of that happening. i just got lucky i reckon

Im thinkin that the screws should thread out either way, thru the top or the bottom. The adjustment screw is cupped at the bottom to matchup w the pushrod. It sounds like the threads are battered a little bit.

You arent using a crowfoot with your torque wrench are you? That would be the only way to torque the jam nut and make sure the adjustment screw didnt move, but using a crow foot adjust your torque giving you an inaccurate torque reading. It shouldnt adjust the torque enough to break the bolt and I think that that was either one of those bad luck situations, or someone has damaged the treads earlier.

All said if it was me I would just adjust the rest of the valves and regardless if one or two of the other valves does the same replace the screws and not torque any of the jam nuts. I usually just tighten them with a wrench and screwdriver at the same time. Just use common sense in tightening them.
