MPG is up with the airhorn

I built the 3.5" airhorn in my avatar and put it on a couple of weeks ago and I had a little over 1/2 tank of fuel. I got down to 1/4 tank and filled it today and mpg is up ~.7 from the previous tank - from 19.2 to 19.9. I know approximately what the error is in my OH puter and actual mpg is close to 21 now. I haven't gotten over 21 since before ulsd. My driving is always mixed - mostly city and country roads and a little 70+mph on the freeways. I should have done this sooner instead of making it my last mod! How are you guys doing with the storebought airhorns? Craig

Not trying to bust your chops or anything, but I think 0.9 mpg is too little a change to attribute to the intake horn. Weather conditions alone will have a greater affect on fuel economy.

Looked at the title thought C Schomer was saying his train horn increased his MPG!! You know the compressed air thingy's trains use to run off cars on crossroads. Now I have to rationalize another way to justify a louder horn, dam!

If you could attach / imbed a photo it would help. The avatar photo can't be expanded enough to see it well. Any info on the parts list / cost?

Guys, give these parts a chance! The other post (Intake Tests) verified the impressive HP/TQ gains for a simple bolt-on part.......and now this guy is claiming almost a 1.0 mpg increase.

On a side note, I just installed an AEM Horkhorse HD intake and an AFE Bladerunner and so far, the mpgs have also increased.......it is possible!!!

Here are some pics comparing the small stock intake 'horn' and a Bladerunner:

Move more air, more efficiently, and you will see power gains and a MPG increase, plain and simple.

Yeah, I thought you meant a train horn install netted you mileage, all I could figure was you blast anyone who cuts you off and thus hitting the brakes less = better fuel economy!

D45- No one is not giving chances, i just would likr to see the pipe this guy made and the avatar is WAY to small to see it. I am a big advocate of more air with a smoother route=more power.

If someone can post pics, I can e-mail a big picture for them to post. I don't know how to do anything else but to put it in my avatar. I didn't know the afe has turning vanes. Vanes help compensate for a tight throated (the inside radius) elbow. You can take a square elbow and put turning vanes in it and it will flow like a radiused elbow. A big inside radius is the most important - the outside radius is not. The outside corners can be square or round and still have about the same flow. It's all in the inside radius! You can see it all on the back of a Trane Ductilator. I built mine with as big an inside radius as I could and leave room for the dipstick to bolt on top and close the hood. I torched a flange out of 1/2" plate and built a square-to-round to fit a leftover 3" CAC pipe from my 97. Then one day I checked out my old 3.5" downpipe from my 03 and found it was exactly the right circumference to make into a square-to-round to fit the flange. So it is 3.5" with an end from the old 3" CAC pipe. I was a tinner in my past life so I laid out the pattern for the gores - it would have been a hell of a lot faster and easier to buy 3.5" ells from napa but I have fun doing this odd stuff. When I drove it with the new elbow I was having a lot of fun with the low end power and as soon as I started driving like before, the OH mpg went up considerably. It take me a couple of months to use a tank so I won't know for awhile but the OH is up about 1mpg. My actual is always higher than the OH with the 100hp Pred tune. Craig

You have to make sure the train horn is facing backwards to get the mileage benefit. Will honking it while going uphill help your speed too? Maybe if you just leave it on, or honking, all the time, it will help even more than just an ocasional blast. Meanwhile, that intake horn looks nice.
