Kitty in a diesel?

Just bought my new truck about 3 weeks ago. '03 1500 4.7 was way under powered to pull my trailer. Was surprised to see a cat when I was crawling around under it. When was the first year these were added? If you got an exhaust system from Banks, could you get the pre-cat system and forget to put the cat back on?

I am assuming from the removed post that the cat is required equipment in these trucks and was not just added to score brownie points for Dodge...

Yes, the strict new emissions laws required they be put back on.

12 valvers had the kitty, then the 24 valves burned a lot cleaner so they didn't come with one, now the 2004's on up get to have one again.

Leave it on, nothing is gained by removing it.

Only thing gained by getting rid of any kitty is noise or sound depending on the rest of the system. At MOST you would get 1hp. To me it is by no means worth it.

I agrre to leave it but have two questions, first, cummins says you can mix oil into the gas with a cat but what if i want to do just that. second, if i were to want to go to a 5" exhaust sytem, what do i do then? i dont knowof any 5" cats out there. Please understand that i am not trying to step on any toes, just valid questions to this component.

I bet there is more than 1 hp lost throught that cat.

one of the salesman that sold me my truck had an 04.5 and he said it was noticable gain when he removed his.

every other rig than that cats have fell off of that I have owned gained power. factory cats are usually a bit restrictive. I have an 01 mustang and people on message boards said the same crap about no power to be gained and It added about 10hp.

IT is not legal for you to get rid of though.

A cat may use only 1 h.p. when new, but run one 150 k, and see how much it will use then once it is packed with soot.
Has anyone priced a new cat, they are outrageous.
In my opinion, alot of us that are jacking up our timing, are in for a cat replacement a little sooner, due to the fact that cummins retards the timing to increase exhaust temp slightly to help burn off the soot, this is just what I heard.
Emissions seems to be tieing our hands, and dictating what we can, and cant do with our own possesions, it seems you can't have good clean fun anymore without breaking some silly law, THIS IS JUST MY OPINION.
Thanks for allowing me to vent Joe
