installing two-way radio

Looking for suggestions... Has anyone installed a two-way / CB radio into an 06 Mega Laramie? I need to (for work) but I want it to be unobtrusive in the cab/dash. I'm thinking of the small storage space under the radio. Does anyone know of a specific model that would fit in this spot?

All idea are appreciated.

RF limited makes a compact radio with big features that would fit into that space just fine. Look HERE at the RF Limited Magnum 257 and 557 model numbers. Technically not a C.B. but easily modified (can be done before it is even shipped to you)
If you want smaller you can find them (Wal Mart) but you'll lose a serious amount of performance.

Check this out too.
I've got one, it's pretty good, not as good as my old full sized unit but better than expected. I wish it was set up with an external speaker to keep the mic size down, but no real complaints. Your local Radio Shack probably has it in stock.

Doing the same thing on a mega on Sept 18th next month. I was thinking of putting the TAD, CB, and switchgear for the lights all underneath the switches for the heated seats. Looks like I was lose that square shaped junk collector by the drink holders, no big deal there. Have to do some cutting on that plastic as well, but after completion I think it should come in pretty clean. I am waiting tell Sept because the lights and feul cell are being fabricated for that date. I would like to get it all done over a weekend. Good luck, and throw some pictures up whichever way you decide to go. I would really like to see your set-up after completion.

Good idea in theory but those are low on performance and known to be plauged with issues. If you want something that small and controls at your finger tips I suggest buying a nice handheld and running it to an antenna.

First, you need to figure out what frequency your work is running on. It would more than likely be commercial vhf or uhf. This will severly limit your options for radio's to what is available commercialy.
I have a kenwood tk-760 vhf radio placed in the pocket under the heater controls of my '04 slt. There realy isn't much for room behind the cubby hole on mine as a result mine winds up sticking out.

If you can find a radio that has a detachable head your mounting options would be much better.

You're correct about the vhf/uhf (can't remember exactly which, but that is the type of radio I'm talking about). I was looking at some models with remote mount controls, then the 'box' could go under a seat or something. We have a really good radio shop in the area, so I'm sure we'll figure something out. I'll post pics when it's done (hopefully next week).

Thanks everyone.

If you are using it for logging/gas road frequencies it will more than likely be vhf.

First is radio installed
second is radio out
third is the plug I made to go into the cigarette lighter to hold the mic. (I don't smoke and don't have a use for the lighter)
I just made it and haven't had a chance to use it yet. I suppose I could have just screwed the mic hanger to the dash, but I don't like to put holes in my truck. It kind of screws up the resale value a little....

Edit: the last criteria was the radio be easly removable. Unfortunatly if I feel like leaving it in the truck, I have to be prepared to lose it. I'm not prepared to lose the radio....

It is a wood broom handle spun in a steel lathe to get it down to size (I used a wood chisel). I tried to imitate the notches in the end of the cigarette lighter as best I could. I drilled pilot holes and screwed a small piece of lexan to it.

It works "ok" it could be a bit of a tighter fit. I would have liked to use a plastic rod as the plug but nothing was handy today when I built it.

I did the same thing with my snowplow control, however I bought a dowell at home Depot. A few wraps of electrical tape and it fits like a glove.

That is what I have in my truck and works great. I did not see a good spot to install a "standard" CB so I went with the Cobra with the controls in the mike. The little power and antenna box is behind the middle console out of sight. I hang the mike from the side of the driver's visor using a retractable mike holder that unclips. When I don't need to use the CB or at night, I just unclip the mike/CB and stash under the seat or you can take it inside with you - real easy. I have no problem hearing the speaker since it hangs around head level.

Well, just for everybodies interest... After talking to the radio shop and looking around, I could not find a real good place to mount a 2-way radio in the cab of a 2006 where it would look good. Even the remote head from the Kenwood model was too big to "fit" anywhere. Ended up going with a nice portable handheld. Does the job fine, about the same price and no holes drilled in my cab!

Thanks for all the suggestions though.
