Head Is Off now More questions
Well the head is off and on its way into the machine shop. No cracks that I could see with the naked eye. Looks like the gasket had a few different leaks going on. One part was leaking Cylinder pressure into the coolant. The other part was mixing coolant and the oil. The valve covers all had a sludge that looks like white lithium grease on the inside. I'm guessing thats from water in the oil? I'm cleaning those.
I Also mentioned the KDP repair to my buddy. I have yet to do one so its a good place to learn plus we can clean out the timing case of all the crap. What parts do we need for that??
Also the IP is wide open so I'm thinking about throwing the 3200GSK since I have that planed for my truck but haven't done it. Should he have gauges for the 3200GS??
On the block the coolant passages had a fiber like material pluging up the holes. Like someone let a piece of carpet float around in there?? Some kind of super head gasket saver snake oil??
Everything is on hold til the head comes back good.
BTW the head was heavy and hind sight we should have took the hood off when we started. The 1/2 ton overhead hoist we used for the head worked great.

So, was there a lot of oil in you coolant??????? if so, i would pull the oil cooler(behind the oil filter) and have then test it for leaks too.........It's not something that happens often........but it does happen..............Sounds like you found your problem........just something to consider

The baby crap is from the water/oil mix. Once you get it running again, warm it up and change the oil and filter ASAP. Coolant contamination is hard on the bearings.
All you need to deal with the KDP is the timing cover gasket and a front crank seal. Don't worry about a fancy tab, use a hammer and a pin punch to peen the case metal over the KDP in a couple spots. There's nothing pushing it out.

moparmarv,
Do the KDP. I just got a good deal on a 98 12v with a cracked housing. So go ahead and get her done like wanna said.
When I did my H/G last spring it had the cracks on the injector bores and on the valve seats. She whould have been fine to put back on, but it gave me the excuse to the wife to put a 7mm head on, for future p-pump conversion.
and whats this talking about the head being heavy! I pulled mine off by myself, and put the new onw back on, with no lift. They ant that bad. mmm Maybe thats why i just had back surgrey last week.
Do you gov. spring for sure. /i want and put 60# valve springs on as well. Also did a port and polish on the new head, and exhaust man., and turbo housing. When putting her back together use the Lucas oil stab., its great for assm. lube.
