I guess the old saying is true...

You realy don't miss something/someone until they are gone. In this case im talking about my wife. She just shipped off to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

I went down to Minneapolis/St.Paul to watch her swear in at MEPS(not sure what that stands for). Then she was shuttled off to the airport to catch her flight at 3:45. She will be at basic training for 6 weeks then she's off to her schooling which won't be done until mid/late September.

She's only been gone a couple of hours and I already miss her dearly. Im going to try and keep my self real busy for the next couple of months.

So anyways, I see alot of people from Texas on this site. She graduates from basic training on August 16th, im going to head down to Texas for about 5 days and watch her graduate on the 16th. Maybe you all can help fill my time and tell me what there is to do/see down there. Incase anyone was wondering I beleive Lackland is right outside of San Antonio.

Thanks for listening to me ramble on.

Thanks for filling me in buddy, I knew it was military something. lol

Im sure she will change, she'll probley come back and be able to whip the dog snot out of me.

I was hoping to maybe catch a diesel meet or something while I was down there. I realy don't plan on driving my truck down there with the price of fuel. I think it would be cheaper to just fly down and rent a car for a couple days.

Yea it sucks pretty bad but I know it'll all pan out for the better in the end. She took some calling cards with her but I realy don't think she will be able to use them much at all in basic, she gets to make one call to me to tell me the address that I can send her letters to. Once she gets into her school she'll have alot more freedom and the ability to converse.

As someone who has been through recruit training (U.S. Coast Guard, active duty for 8 years and counting), you can not imagine how important something like a letter is. There's only three things to look forward to in boot camp, and that is chow time, sleep, and mail call. Getting a letter in boot camp really lifts your spirits. Mail is the only link to the outside world while you are there.

The best advice I can give, is to write to her often. It will mean a lot (and I mean a lot) to her.

Best of luck to her.

I agree with JR. Write lots of letters and tell her how much you miss her and how proud you are of her. It really sucks to be the only one not getting letters during mail call so send at least 1 a day...you'll be a hero in her eyes and also in her companies eyes. What is she planning on doing?

I actually just spoke to her on the phone, she just landed in San Antonio and was sitting on the plane waiting to unboard. She has to catch a bus at 10:15 tonite to Lackland and I guess it all starts from there, as soon as she takes the first step off that bus.

Thanks for all the input guys, I appreciate it.

I'll be sure to write her a ton of letters. Between my family, her family and me I think she'll have a constant flow of mail comming her way.

Shes going in for Ultrasound Technician, where they scan the mothers stomach to check out the unborn babies.

I'll make sure to include in my first letter that I made a thread about her on DTR, she'll get a real kick out of that.

Hey, Nate, congrats on being able to support a member of the armed forces... it's a great feeling to be one. Be supportive, I know you are.

LMK if I can do anything for you...

Thanks madhat! Correct me if im wrong but you are a DI for the Marine Corps right?

I'm going to be as supportive as I humanly can. I'm pretty familiar with the services and how things operate. My mother served 20 years in the Army. I still am as excited as she is about everything, im sortive eager to relocate. I just hope we don't get stationed in Italy or Spain or something. I can't see my self there.lol

Ok, i'll bite. How do I "mess" her up.

been there done that ... spent my 6 weeks there back in '90. damm am i that old? any way it really isnt as bad as everyone says it is. tell her to remember that her di's have a job to do and they do it well. listen very carefully especially when they are telling the airman next to her what they did wrong. letters go a long way and she will have some time to write back and the farther along she goes the more phone privileges she will earn. definatly try to get down there for her graduation, it will be awesome for her to have you there and for you to get to meet some of her new friends. i still have contact with a couple of my brothers from basic and from the service. we are scattered all over the world now but important times still get talked about.

tell her good luck and thanks for all of the sacrifices you will both make in the future.

Nate.........Speaking of the commerical he is referring too....Call 1-800-8888-TEX and get a free map and travel guide. It might give you some ideas on stuff to do if you come down to visit her. There is alot to do around San Antonio in particular....Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World, Riverwalk, Hill Country nearby, Tubing the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels etc.
