I ordered my 4 inch exhaust and I am trying to install it. I can't get the 2 bolts holding the down pipe lose. I have soaked them in WD 40, tried heat but they won't budge. Any suggestions would be great!

 

.....might want to pass on the Heat trick, heat will expand the bolts at a greater rate than the surrounding metal (different coefficient of Thermal Expansion) -

I used Liquid Wrench when I pulled mine last winter, let 'em soak for about an hour, than applied a healthy amount of Elbow Grease...

 

I used some wd-40, then used a couple of long extensions with a cheater bar so I could get some elbow room and they came right off.

 

I let mine soak a while and had to go from underneath. Seem to work good with a nice long breaker bar. Bolts are 12point but im sure youve discovered that already Happy wrenchin -Jake

 

I have let them soak for about 2 hours this time. I took my floor jack handle apart and used it as a cheater bar and they still won't budge. Guess I'll reengage in the morning

 

get some B.P BLASTER . a few dollars a can do what it says, i took my ex manifold off, sprayed this on the bolts a few times , about a hour later bolts came right out with no problem,, I use this off shore, on a jack up drilling rig , and bolts there will rust up in a month so much you cant tell what size they are, hope this helps

I did a search for BP Blaster and the companies web site says NAPA carries it. I'm going to run over there tomorrow and pick some up. If they have it!

 

Good lesson here, WD-40 is no substitute for real penetrating oil. Liquid Wrench is marginal, PB Blaster good but the best is Kroil from http://www.kanolabs.com/

 

I get PB Blaster at my local Advance Auto Parts.

 

Kano kicks but!!! I love that stuff. I mix a little in with my bath soap when done wrenching on the truck to remove excess grease on my body.

what drive wrench are you using? If not already, try a 1/2" drive breakover.. Just be careful not to break the bolts off with it.

 

yeah, it's actually PB, not BP... it's in a white/yellow can and looks very "cheesy", but it flat out WORKS... outperforms WD-40 tenfold.

It also stings like a mother when you forget which way the nozzle is pointed and shoot it right into your eye ... *cough* so I've heard

 

try the pb blaster.... also try tightning the bolts a little or an inpact gun on light setting to vibrate it lose....

 

Another old trick if you can't find PB is to heat up the bolts and use paraffin wax on the bolts. The heat sucks it into the threads and will break them loose after they cool down.You can get paraffin at any local grocery store or perhaps under the lid of that jar of jelly you have sitting around. I thought that the downtube had a clamp at the top. Are you talking about the u-bolt that mounts to the trans bellhousing?

 

I agree with spun bearing.....by heat -not a little propane torch! must be hotter then that!! I guarntee they will jump out of there after you cycle them a couple of times!!
