evil smell
I got in my truck yesterday and the A/C system is putting out a really bad smell. ??? It's most noticeable when I first started it, but it never really went away all day. Its a sort of...well, just bad, but nothing I've ever smelled in a vehicle before. Any ideas? Where does the system pick up air from? Maybe I have some rotting something in there?

Al

Re:evil smell
Is it a mold/mildew smell? I've had that before, and it is not pleasant! If you think that that might be the problem, you may be able to use some spray disinfectant or the like. Put your A/C to MAX, and the fan on high. On the passenger side, if you kinda stand on your head, you can see the air intake under the dash. Spray lots of disinfectant into the intake and then shut the system off and let it set. It works, but will smell like a hospital for a while. Good luck,
Ed

Chargersgsd,
I have the same odor and asked a while ago about how to fix it. This is the link to that thread: A/C Odor Link
Good Luck

Re:evil smell
I had it when mine was new. Only had it in Max AC and it was not constant, just came and went. Smelled like some sort of fumes. Actually caused a slight burn to the eyes. Very unpleasant. Talked to the dealer & since they couldn't duplicate it, I had to be hallucinating. It has cleared with time. I do occasionally get a brief whiff, but nothing like when it was new. Now have 9000 miles.

Re:evil smell
I forgot to include that my AC odor was not fungus, mildew or any other bacterial growth. It was chemical. Also, in my humble opinion, why would a brand new truck have the AC mold syndrome? Does not make sense.

Mine also has what you refer to as a chemical smell. It is almost a perfumish smell. Everyone always assumes it is a mildew smell which it is definitely not. There is no rhyme or reason as to when it does it. It can occur in either the fresh or recirculate mode. I had hoped it would get better with use but it so far it has not. Hopefully someone will figure this one out. :

Re:evil smell
I'm with Jonesey, just can't seem to get rid of this. But mine has improved with time and ONLY happens in max AC. When the truck was new it would be so strong, I'd have to crack open a window. Now I just flip it to normal ac and it clears very quickly.

This must be a real oddity since so few of us seem to have it. Everyone else seems to have the moldy musty odor.

my ac has the funk as well. comes and goes quickly though. I have only ran the ac in recirc mode and fan on #2 or #3.

also get the loud "crunch" when starting the ac. If the truck is at idle, I do not get the noise. Only when the truck is moving and even then it is not every time.

Re:evil smell
I've noticed that I get that smell when I really get on it. As soon as I let off on the excellerator it goes away. Also I pretty much run my air on recirculate all the time. I just use as another sensory input to let me know to let off on it a little. Also it happena a lot at red lights when ferds or Chevy's are present.

Re:evil smell
We had the same problem with our a/c. It smelled like something had died in there. The smell is intermittent though. We also had the loud "crunch" or "thud" sound when turning on the a/c. I still haven't found out what that is, but I can guess what the dealer will say. "That's normal" >
We also had a vibration that you could feel in the steering wheel when we turned on the a/c. We talked to the dealer about that and took it in 3 times for them to look at and just got the answer: "That's normal" Well at 6,100miles the a/c siezed and ripped up the belt. We had no a/c for almost a month. They got the new a/c compressor on now and it is vibrating worse that before and also making a howling noise.
Has anyone had this problem, or did we just get a "lemon"?

Re:evil smell
If your a/c compressor went kaboom then there is debris in the system that if not filtered out will cause the next compressor to seize also. This may be the noise you are hearing. It is a big job to flush all the system with cleaners. We would replace all lines and condenser, dryer, compressor and flush the evap if we had a seized compressor. Even then sometimes the second one would go. If the compressor has resistance it will put more load on the engine and cause a vibration sometimes. Good luck getting it fixed.

Re:evil smell
Just got back from the dealer today. They said dodge is having a problem with their A/C systems and that their techs are working on a fix for them. Until they come up with one, the dealer told us we would just have to put up with the possibilty of it going out again and leaving us stranded like it did last time. :- Hope they figure it out soon. It's not fun having to ride in a tow truck when I should be driving the new truck :
