Couple of dyno'ing questions...

Ok fellas, I got the Hot upgrade today for the Edge and got in contact with a shop out of Chula Vista that has a Dynojet, so I am going to be putting the truck on the rollers in the next couple weeks. My questions are:

1.) Is there any downsides to dyno'ing in Tow/Haul mode? It locks the converter MUCH earlier and if I just slowly roll into the gas until it's all the way to the floor, it doesn't downshift, so I should probably get the best curve that way, right?

2.) Should I dyno in 3rd gear, or overdrive?

Remember, I'm on the stock tranny...so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I was told by dyno owners that do lot of diesels that diesel autos should dyno in OD. Without a tc lockup switch it is a little hard to get a good pull without down shifting. I have dyno'd both in 3rd and OD and did not really see much difference in the overall numbers either way.

Before my lockup button, I would just accelerate normal to get to OD and lockup keep speed above 65 and then start pull rolling into the throttle to WOT not just nailing it. This would keep it from down shifting.

Not sure how the 4.10 gear will effect down shifting if any.

When I floor it quick at 60 it will kick down...TC locks at about 50-55, depending on how much pedal I have mashed...however, it will stay locked all the way down to 40 and if I just SLOWLY give it throttle, it will stay locked...so when they do our pulls, 60-top speed is a good pull?

On a dynojet dyno I have always had great luck by running my truck up to 70mph in OVERDRIVE..........then floor it and hold it to around 120mph.

If you go less than 70, it risks shifting down and messing up the run. My tranny is stock.

Personally, I haven't had good luck on the one Mustang dyno I was on. But I was told you need to dyno in 3rd.....1 to 1 ratio....on those.

Currently, with just a Smarty on 9........im at 466hp/915tq.

Shew! I don't think my truck can go 120! I would be in some SERIOUS red at that speed. The fastest I have had my truck is about 100...those 3.73s must be nice on the highway, huh? Oh well. I get two pulls, so I will try the first at 60, roll in a little slow then HAMMER down! I can't wait. I just want to see where this stack has put me. It will be a week and a half or two, but I will let ya'll know!

Well your 4.10s will change your top speed for sure, but I would still try to get to OD and locked and then ease into the pull. From my experience if you stay above 65mph and then start pull it will not down shift, or not as likely to. On a dynojet you will probably see higher mph than you can actually see on the road.

Yeah, I guess with the 4.10s you would have to slow down accordingly. Before you go dyno again, just practice some WOT runs on the highway and see at what speed you need to be at to NOT shift down out of O/D. 65 maybe? 60?

On the dynojet, you just want to make sure you are in o/d and not let it shift down.

Thanks for the advice ya'll! Man, going from Edge, to Edge with Puck was a jump, but that Hot upgrade REALLY was big...it's VERY obvious that I am going to have to keep her turned down Can't WAIT for my tranny...I'll keep ya'll posted!

Well you are at a fueling level that will tax the lift pump to keep up with fuel to the cp3. Stock turbo and tc/tranny will also be stressed pretty hard. You might have trouble with slipping tc on the rollers.

You might drain your rail too,, you will be able to see that on the dyno graph.

The last few runs we did on my truck was in OD, worked much better in my case anyways. Seemed to be able to get better traction on the wheels. I was able to get over 50 lbs of boost that way

It varies from place to place. I would guess most places are in the $50.00-$60.00 range for 3 runs.

If you can go to a "Dyno Day" event with a bunch of other trucks, you may save a little more.

My experience has been very positive and consistent with Dyno Jet Dynos.
