Cold Air Intake??
OK Guys....I'm a 'Newbie' to diesels.....What is a Cold Air Intake?? I understand the concept BUT can/how do I do it to my STOCK air box??
As I'm a Full Time RV'r and I'm not into cleaning/oiling/letting drain air filters (used K&N on my bikes for years) right now I'll stick w/stock but if I can IMPROVE air flow and the type of air to the stock air filter/box I'm all for it!!
Just need some info (and pic's). Somebody please HELP a 'Newbie'

I used a dremel tool to remove the bottom of mine. I know of others that used a 1" hole saw to "swiss cheese" theirs.
Amsoil makes a dry drop in filter that flows better than stock, to clean, just knock the dirt off blow it out with compressed air and drop it back in. I think its called Nano, but dont qoute me on that.

I have the amsoil drop in nano-fiber filter... Its great. All it needs is to be vacuumed every few months for optimal performance (if you drive on dusty roads)... I have seen the amsoil put down the same power as an AFE Stage II on a dyno (Smarty Jr),

I would be leary of the Amsoil Nano filters, especially after reading this post and knowing that Amsoil WILL NOT warranty the filter that comes with (or used to come with) the Icebox intake:

I run the Amsoil Ea drop in filter and put a big 'ol hole in the bottom of my air box then went to Home Depot and bought me $11 worth of stuff to make my own air intake. Here's the pics. Donnee, get your tail over here, since your retarded, I mean retired, you have no excuse, it'll only take about an hour to do it, I bought a hole saw to make it a snap.

Alarming yes!
Just very odd that an Amsoil rep never posted in that thread and also because Amsoil does not warranty their filter with the Icebox kit.
Odd, very odd......

The stock air box is a cold air intake the problem is its intake hole is not that big. As others have mentioned, you can use a 1" paddle bit and drill a hole in each of the squares in the bottom of the air box to let in more air. I use a WIX (NAPA Gold) drop in paper filter available anywhere. It is rated at 675cfm of air which is plenty but it is not reusable. For more flow, you can also gut the insides of the stock 'torque tube'. Search for how to do this, its easy.

I ran my thermocoupler in the airbox for a week in July, and never saw air that was hotter than the outside temp. In fact at cruising speeds the air was 2-3* cooler than outside temp.
I run the mega K&N filter, noticed no difference in fuel mileage, but the air filter minder doesn't pull down like it did with the stock filter.
