Cerium Oxide "Nanofuel" additive for diesel #2

From the "New Scientist": http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994271

This one has a little more credibility than most claims. 10% better fuel mileage is the "official estimate" by Oxonica, but on the technical forums, various associated engineers are saying that's very conservative. They're also saying that cerium oxide nanites doped with conductive materials can raise horsepower and torque in diesel engines by as much as 25%.

Hmmm. We'll see.

Not trying to rain on anybodys parade but, I will wait to see. I had one of those science mags that had some "mileage enhancers" advertized in it. If I would have put all them on the gasser truck I had then, I would have had to drain the tank twice a year if they all performed as advertized.

Over herer I read an artzicle in German that stated that the use of cerium oxide in an engine tuned specifically to the fuel can result in 10% better fuel mileage. They didn't want to sell this as a miracle juice. From other sources I've read a lot of slamming and calling this snake oil. I think it's the same as with biodiesel. If you have a proper setup it does work (for bio) and tested in a controlled environment we'll see the possible benefits. I'd be interested in the price for the treatment of a liter of #2 though. Maybe this will be expensive enough to make it economically useless. Also I didn't get any information on the possible health and environment issues from the emissions of a threated diesel.

Just my 2c

Not real sure what the company is actually trying to promote. HOWEVER, being the unedumicated Arkie that I am and the fact that I've worked in the optics field for 25 or so years, I shall put forth this small tidbit of information.
Cerium Oxide is used as a glass polisher. Due to its structure, it allows for a very fine finish on optical components. In order to make a piece of glass or metal into an object with good opticals qualities, material has to be removed.
With this tidbit of info, I would think that using cerium oxide would be likened to using Bon Ami or similar abrasive material to help seat pistons rings faster.

shortround: What I read into that stuff they want to use nanotechnology pieces of thet stuff that would be about the size of the longer molecules in the diesel fuel. I'm rather interested in the outcome because if it works it would shure be fine. I do think that in a stock burn geometry there should be little to none of the fuel contacting the cylinder walls.

Interesting info on the material for polishing lenses ;D gonna get to a show and shine of the engine interior too ;D
