Brake/Powersteering relationship?
Brake/Powersteering relationship?
Hi. 1999 Ram 2500 diesel. First of all I have a stupendous powersteering fluid leak.
Two places appear to be the source. There is a connection on the driver side frame with a tee that goes to the brake caliper, the other is from the master cylinder. I'm not sure what is spraying on what. I do know that when the power steering pump runs out of fluid the brakes also "growl". I will find the source of the leak, but could someone please explain the relationship between the steering and the brakes? How are these two systems related?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Where is a good place to purchase a "real" service manual?
Travis.

You have what are called hydro-boost brakes. Instead of a vacuum-assisted brake booster you have a hydraulic-assisted brake booster. The brake booster gets its hydraulic fluid and pressure from the power steering pump/system. They are tied together.
the brake fluid and powersteering fluid are seperate.
the powersteering pump provides the boost for the brakes, as mentioned above.
if you have a leak at the brake lines T, most likely the hydroboost assy is leaking powersteering fluid and its dripping down on the brake lines, easier to see looking up from under the truck

I have just developed a similar problem with my truck. Only thing different is sometimes when I hit the brakes power steering fluid comes out from under the cap. So I guess just fix my ps leak and I'm good?
flush out the old ps fluid, it causes all kinds of problems, you will have to explain where and what fluid you are actually leaking
also might be best to start your own thread, good to see that you are searching before posting
