Question Best way to add 7 pin trailer harness??

Hey guy's,
One of my friends has a 2006 2500 without the factory tow package. He wants me to install a 7 pin plug so that he will be able to have trailer brakes. I am wondering what the easiest way to do this is.

I have found a harness that Dodge sells, but I am not sure if it simply plugs into the oem harness, or if I will have to splice into the oem wires.

I would really like to find a plug in harness. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

If you don't have the factory tow package my guess is you'll need to splice. The only place to plug into the harness is at the back of the 7 way plug.I would use weatherproof heat shrink connectors.I wouldn't solder them.

Many auto parts stores and trailer dealers sell application specific adapters. You disconnect the wiring plug, plug in the adapter, then plug it back together. Takes two minutes. Last I checked, most applications run about $20.

I think what he is looking for is if the wires are there like the 7 pin would be so he can run to them and run trailer brakes and reverse lights without a bunch of headache or running wires. The truck (like mine) didn't come with a tow package and the factory 7 pin. Our only came with the 4 flat hook up under the bumper. Not the 7 pin intergrated.

How hard would it be to upgrade to the 7 pin factory style hookup without wiring all the way up to the cab? Make it look and work like it came from the factory that way.

Am I correct, sorry to hijack if not.

That's a good idea but it only has 3 channels for running lights and turn signals*brake lights. It's good for temporary uses if you don't need trailer brakes.

There are other ones you can buy that plug into the tail light connectors also, however I would get underneath it and check because i would assume its all plug and play heck everything on the newers ones are plug and play I dont see them making a completely different rear harness due to not having the tow package considering most of them have it or can be installed at the dealer. Doubt the dealer would do a hokey splice job for it. My 4 plug connector is hard wired right in its the 7 pin in the bumper that is plugged in. Now does he want a 7 plug in the rear or bed? I bought a connector that spliced in the rear that allowed me to add an in-bed 7 pin connector. Kind of hard to find and a lot places state they dont make them yet but they do, Husky does, and a few otehrs but its late and I cant think...lol And looking back cant spell either!

Yes, this is what I am trying to say. He has the 4 wire flat, but wants to upgrade to the factory 7 pin.

Thanks,

Kevin

Yes, He wants to mount the 7 pin in the factory location.

I would have to agree with you. Most automakers use the same harness on all models. They just add (ie, plug-in) the different options for each package. Surely Dodge has done the same thing.

Thanks,

Kevin

With most of those "plug" in harnesses, you don't get the trailer brake wire ( has to go all the way to the cab) or the power wire for the trailer and battery ( has to go all the way to the underhood fuse box). Buy the dodge harness. It will be a much better fit and it will pay off in the long run for less headaches. Double check for the connector under the truck. You may only have to buy the 7 way for the bumper. There may be a square connector already there to plug into it. If there is, make sure the fuses are in the underhood box for trailer brakes, trailer turn ect.

Exactly. The adapters do not provide the connections needed for the brake controls or the 12v auxillary. I will call the dealer today and ask about an add on kit.

Thanks,

Kevin

I am pretty sure Dodge make a 7 wire accessory kit to wire a 7 pin trailer tow package. Try talking to a "KNOWABLE" parts dept. If you can find one!!

mine came with the flat 4 only. i had the 7 pin installed in the factory location. beside the lic. plate. my local trailer specalists, pit crew in georgetown indiana did the whole job for about 70 bucks. that included the female connector on the bumper. the adaptor or male end of the 7 pin for a flat 4 or flat 5 from your boat trailer. the hunk of wire to do the job all connections and labor. then i tucked the factory flat 4 away and no wires show unless i'm towing.
