banging noise

I have a quad cab, 4x4, 47re. Since I have had it, there has been a loud noise and the transmission sounds like it is going to fly apart when it shifts from 3rd to 4th between 45-50 mph and under load. The dealer reflashed the trans and it helped a little, but it is still there after the 4th time at the dealer. I have tried two different dealers. Now they just say, "take the OD off until you are above 50mph! This is supposed to be an automatic, not stick. Also, after 55 mph, there is a metalic banging noise somewhere in the engine compartment or tranny. I have had that looked at 3 different times at two dealers. They have not fixed it and don't know what it is. Any suggestions on the two problems? I am usually a toyota guy, and I am thinking of going back. The dealers for dodge are horrible!

Re:banging noise

I also have the 47RE but have had no problems with mine except that under hard acceleration it will not shift into OD until I let my foot off the accelerator. BUT, if I do start to have problems that can't seem to get fixed, I'm gonna try like heck to blow it up so I can get a 48RE replacement!!

That's all I have to say about that....

Re:banging noise

A good service dept in ANY dealer is hard to find. They can sell em, just can't fix em. I am utterly convinced that the Chevy Dealer in Greenville, SC is staffed by Mr. Goodwrench dropouts.

I bought my 03 Ram at Benson Dodge in Greer South Carolina. Service Dept seems to be reasonably good. I know there are good ones. Just have to find em. They all tell you they are the best and have earned the prestigious 5 star award. Yet, it would appear, most couldn't find their backside with both hands. The 5 star thing means nothing. If DC pulls a Dealers 5 star rating, that store is really the bottom of the barrel.

I am very hostile today, must be starting , or ending, my period!!!!

Re:banging noise

I agree, the dealer that sold me the truck was great, even after when I told him that the truck was having problems. But the service is a completely different story. I think that I am going to speak with the Attorney general in CA to see if DC will buy the truck back. I am sick of the, "just live with it" attitude the service dept has! I paid about 40k for a truck that does not work right! Complelety unacceptable! And, I still have not gotten any advise here on what could be wrong.

Re:banging noise

The problem may lie in your transfer case. In my old 99 Chevy 4x4 I was having a lot of problems with banging noises and harsh shifting which I thought were trans and rear problems. It turned out to be bad fluid in the transfer case. They changed the fluid and the problems went away.

Just a thought....

Re:banging noise

Your posts indicate that it isn't spring slap. I'm pretty sure the springs give me a tap noise when going over bumps with the slip-on camper on. It's not quite down to the overloads.

Re:banging noise

OK, first check all of your exhaust system to ensure that all of the clamps are properly tightend. After this is done you will want to pull that tie wrap off the Tranny dipstick that has it attached to the heater line on the passenger side under the hood. You can then rettach it after you add some thick rubber and or foam around it and use a heavy duty tie wrap.
By doing all of this it should get rid of your noise, which by the way is the sound of the tranny & exhaust system vibrating against this when the tranny goes into OD under a slight load. ;D ;D ;D
I hope this fixes your problems, it did mine.
Oh, Yeah have a nice Day

Re:banging noise

Thanks for your help. I will try putting the insulation around the dipstick. I thought that the banging sound might be coming from there, so I put several tiewraps around anything and everything that could have been loose. I will let you know what happens. After this, I will have the dealer check the transfer case. Once again, thanks for your responses.

there has been a loud noise and the transmission sounds like it is going to fly apart when it shifts from 3rd to 4th between 45-50 mph and under load.
[/quote]It may be what my truck does too- What happens on mine is that while using moderate to heavy throttle input where the Turbo is spun up real good and when the trans is in drive and the engine speed/RPM has approached the need for the converter to lock up it will drop the RPM so fast that the engine can't swallow all of the air that it was getting at the higher RPM, the air and pressure waves flow back through the Turbo compressor wheel and produce a loud noise that is referred to as Chuffing.
The noise is noted under the front passengers feet and sounds pretty gnarly! and from what I have learned is normal sort of, I say sort of because its gonna happen under those conditions but it is hard on the Turbo shaft. You can minimize it somewhat by backing off the throttle just a little to slow down the turbo just before the trans locks the converter.

Re:banging noise

Chuffing, yes, that's it!
My wife looked over at me the first time she heard it and thought something serious had happened.
My 1995 kind of did it too.

Once you tighten up all of the exhaust clamps the sound will shift from under the front passenger to behind the dash on the passenger side. That is exactly where the Turbo & Tranny dip stick are ;D ;D ;D

Re:banging noise

Last night I went and tightened everylast thing that I could and checked everything else. There was nothing loose on the exhaust, just some handing wires. I will see how it runs today. That will hopefully deal with the banging noise. About the torque lock up noise, that's what the dealer said it was and that it was normal. I just dont see how it can be since it sounds like my transmission is falling apart! Especially when supergewl said it is bad for the turbo.
