'96 TPS location
'96 TPS location
I was on one of the forums the other day, can't remember which one, looking for some tranny fix input. I've got a '96 4x4 auto that will not shift into overdrive all of the time. I relaced the icecube relay for the transmission and it seemed to help but now it's doing the same thing. While motoring along I can put the transmission into neutral, turn the key off then back on, go back to drive and it will shift into overdrive---Sometimes. I think it might be the TPS (at least a starting point) and whatever forum it was had some photo's that one of you was kind enough to post on the TPS location. I've used the search mode and cannot find it again. The attachment from Turbo Diesel register shows a newer set up than a '96, I think. I'm pretty sure that I've found mine at the end of the throttle linkage, but the connector plug is underneath-not on top. It's about 20 below up here now with the wind chill, just want to make sure that I'm into the right connector. Can someone please direct me to the previous photo posts. Thanks in advance.
warden

It's attached to your injection pump throttle linkage ... look where you see the big spring ... look towards the outboard side of that spring and you see an approx 2"x2" square looking black thing with a plug on the bottom thats it!
Re:'96 TPS location
My tranny started acting like that not too long ago. It turned out that the problem was self inflicted. A year and a half ago when I bought the truck, I was going to install a "mystery" switch. I decided not to when I found out that it had the potential to do damage so I tied the ground wire around the wiring harness from the computer. The wire managed to work its way down to where the end of it was touching the inner fender. It had Bill K confused when I talked to him about it. I found it more by accident and cut it off since it was so cold then (and now). My tranny went back to normal and no problem since. You may want to check your wiring harness from the computer to the tranny for a grounded wire.
Good Luck
Tom

Hey Folks,
Thanks for the feedback. I've got it located, looks like it will be a pain in the butt to get at. I've got to get a bulldozer and make enough room in the garage to get my Hummin Cummins in to work on it. Too cold to do it outside right now. This is a great site, never any loss for help from you folks.
warden
