I can get my hands on a 2nd gen. 12v turbo. Will this work on my 89 non-intercooled? If so what kind of performance can I expect? And are there any mods I need to do to it to make it work? Thanks
I know it can be done,I don't have a non ic truck so I didn't have to deal with it.I think the outlet is a different size because a hx-35 was made to feed into a intercooler.Also the intake is 4in. compared to 3in. on the non ic equiped trucks.As for performance,There is not a whole lot of gain seeing as you already have a 16cm. housing.But if you have a surging problem like I did than it's a great upgrade.And the sound is much better than a H1C.I'm sure somebody we'll chime in and tell you more about the swap.
Since you have stock injectors I would suggest keeping the 12 cm exhaust housing on the 2nd gen turbo. This will mean you need to move the downpipe back 1.5 inches, or shorten it - whatever is easiest for you. The 12 cm housing gives excellent spoolup, you will love it. It also keeps the EGT down at lower RPM so you can tow in a higher gear on a steep hill without downshifting for EGT control. Like Caleb said, you'll have to do something about your intake duct (there's a pic in my gallery that might help you with that). Also, the newer turbos used a clamp together flange on the compressor outlet. It looks a lot different than your turbo, but you can just get a longer piece of boost hose and clamp it over the outlet. You'll need to reclock the compressor, this is done by releasing the tension on the snap ring that holds the compressor housing on and rotating the housing until you like where it points.
The 12 valve one is ok as noted by others and has a 56mm compressor wheel compared to the 54 (I think) on yours. But, the 24 valve turbo is different with the wastegate actuator mounted on the compressor housing you can not index the compressor housing and keep the wastegate. Also it has the a 54mm wheel.
